I think it may work more as an amplifier. If they like you for other reasons--demographics, anecdotes, a personality that "pops"--they may like you more for showing a little persistence/desire. I'm so sorry to read of all the sad cards recently. 
It seems to me that if one has ever received a postcard from them in the past, it's possible that their name is in some database somewhere, and fibbing about previous auditions could come back to bite them in the ass down the line if, indeed, the interview in which the question was asked leads to a scheduled taping.
Therefore, last week, I answered "yes, I did try a few years back," and no further details were requested.
I suppose I can analyze this further next week, after I receive my postcard.

I think you're right that they could discover a fib, assuming that the really do keep records on auditioners. (If they do, it's ponderous file I have compiled.) But, as for your answer, I'm afraid that it sounds like my unfortunate habit when answering question during interviews: I treat the questions (particularly unexpected ones) as requests for information, for which a simple, true, yet boring answer ought to suffice. The successful auditioners, OTOH, treat any question as just another opportunity to present a favorable sound bite. Thank you! Like last year, I just tried to have as much fin with it as possible and I guess that worked. I found myself doing the same kind of dance with TPTB during the selection process.. I would have to say to 2ndchance that yeah... I kept talking as much as possible even when (possibly especially when) they weren't talking. Just happy and humbled again by whatever it was that helped me get that happy card. It was my 3rd in-person interview, but in no stranger to the phone game either(damn you Mariah Carey)... I've thought since the first episode I could do really well on the show and hopefully I will get the chance to live the dream out someday.. No matter what I'm blessed!
