He didn't think it out. The Washington Monument doesn't have a south pillar.

That would have been my reasoning, and I wouldn't have pulled the trigger either.

The "pillars" clue aside, reading the whole book might have contributed to Kevin's wrong answer. The (incredibly lame) Masonic treasure turns out to be hidden in the Washington Monument's cornerstone.
