PODS moving?

Anyone here have experience using PODS moving? BD is considering this option, in lieu of her and the new hubby driving a rental truck full of her stuff cross-country. Not the greatest of honeymoons. The PODS online quoting machine is apparently broken, so I can't get a estimated cost at the moment. But I was wondering if I should even bother, and what their reputation is.

The trucking company my husband works for has two pack-it-yourself services that you may want to look into: U-Pack and ReloCubes (which you have to scroll down to see on this Web site):

The only testimonials I've seen are letters from happy customers publisheed in the company newsletter, so consider the source, but it's a reliable company. I'm thinking of using them to retrieve stuff from my mom's house when it finally sells.

Ambulance Driver: We had to dig him out from under the most peculiar things I ever saw.
Dr. Hill: What things?
Ambulance Driver: Well, I don't know what they are; I never saw them before. They looked like great big seed pods.
Dr. Hill: Where was the truck coming from?
Ambulance Driver: Santa Mira.

I've used PODS several times, but just for local on-site storage. The idea makes sense - you have plenty of time to do your own packing so the only cost is shipping the container. I'm just not up on what their shipping and storage prices are.

OTOH, watching the Podzilla machine is pertty cool.

Thank you, but I'm not planning on standing in traffic in the middle of the road.

Thanks for the link. They have offices near home and near Ft. Irwin, or as near as you're likely to get. I will check them out further.

Check your local regulations as to how long they are allowed to remain on site, also. We have a very transient population with the military here, so people were starting to raise a stink about PODS remaining in people's yards for weeks at a time, so we have restrictions on how long they can be in place for loading and unloading. We don't have the option of a leisurely packing job, unfortunately. I think it's a week, tops, then it's gotta go...

We've used them for local storage and sit-in-the-driveway storage but never for travelling.

Funny you should mention this. With our impending move to the midwest, this is one of the options were are considering. The main reasons we like this option are twofold. First, you just put the stuff in the container and have it delivered when you are ready to take it. They (PODS) will pick up the container and store it where you tell them to. Since we are planning to just move without having bought a new place, that works better for us. We are in no hurry to find a new place and do not want to feel like we are rushed into making a decision to buy. Second, I have done a little pricing and the PODS options would cost about 40-50% of what it would cost to have a moving company do the move. Plus, the moving company would have to offload our stuff to store it and then put it back on a truck to deliver it. I much prefer not having it moved around so much.

These are just the things I have found by doing a quick estimate. I don't know any of the minutae yet as we have not sold our place yet and are not yet ready to set a move date.
