According to the NFC West Blog on ESPN, 8 of the 16 possible scenarios would have a 7-9 NFC West team hosting a playoff game.

Re: NFL Pick'em Contest standings
I'd say that's about right. The only way it doesn't happen is if St. Louis or Seattle wins both of their remaining games. If both lose this weekend then 7-9 is guaranteed.takinover wrote:According to the NFC West Blog on ESPN, 8 of the 16 possible scenarios would have a 7-9 NFC West team hosting a playoff game.
St. Louis hosts San Francisco and then is at Seattle.
Seattle is at Tampa Bay and then hosts St. Louis.
St. Louis could certainly beat SF although they are only a two point favorite at home but then has to go to Seattle. Seattle is a 6 point underdog at Tampa but then gets the finale at home. I certainly wouldn't bet against each team splitting the final two games and winding up tied for first at 7-9. Hmmm. I guess the finale between St. Louis and Seattle could be a tie and a 6-9-1 team could host a playoff game.
San Francisco can also get into the mix by winning their last two games as long as Seattle loses one.
San Francisco is at St. Louis and then hosts Arizona.

A win by New Orleans next week (Which should happen against TB, but that's why they play the games) would guarantee a 12 win team playing at the NFC West winner, who will have either 8, or hopefully just 7 wins. That will be sweet! I can't wait to hear the beyotching from Saints or Falcons fans over that little injustice of the league's playoff system.....
Also, I noticed that the NFL got cute and scheduled all divisional matchups for the final week. I can't stand schedule rigging in any sport... and while I realize that the schedule isn't just made up totally at random, it still unfolded in its own odd and unique ways.... and forcing all interdivisional games for Week 17 is about as blatant as that gets. And the NFL gets what it deserves, as the only matchup that is actually a do-or-die game for both teams, and is being thrust onto the national spotlight, is the "epic" battle between the teams atop its worst division in league history.....

I like having the schedule this way with the divisional opponents all facing each other the final week. I wish they would do the final two weekends this way. I wouldn't even mind if the final three weeks were like this with all divisional games. Makes it more like the college football schedule. Or at least the way it is in real conferences (Big Ten) with almost all the non-conference games out of the way early in the year.littlebeast13 wrote:andrewjackson wrote:New playoff standings after week 16:

The ironic thing is, though, that you stand a better chance of making divisional matchups meaningless by forcing them towards the end of the season. Out of all those intradivisional matchups.... only one that's truly significant on both sides in the playoff race. The schedulemaker generally creates more meaningful final week games via whatever the normal method was.....
I just like for things to have that look of being random, even if it really isn't. Creates more points of interest.....

I'm not sure how being random would make more points of interest. Yes, there is only one game with both teams having a "win and in" scenario this time around but there are several that could have wound up that way. By having intradivisional games the last weekend I think you are increasing the chances of that happening.littlebeast13 wrote:andrewjackson wrote:I like having the schedule this way with the divisional opponents all facing each other the final week. The Tampa Bay v. New Orleans game could have been very significant. As it, it is pretty important to both teams. If New Orleans wins they would have the tie-breaker on Atlanta (if they lose) by having a better divisional record. Tampa Bay needs the win and help to make the playoffs. Playing a divisional rival also means that it is a conference game which affects the tie-breakers.
The Indianapolis v. Tennessee game is important because it is a divisional game. If the Colts lose and Jacksonville wins, the Jags win the tie-breaker because that Colts loss drops them to 3-3 in the division while Jacksonville would rise to 4-2. If they had already played all the divisional games, then the final game may or may not have been so important.
Hey, the Detroit v. Minnesota game is a big deal for me since it means that Detroit has a chance to finish in 3rd place for the first time since 2007. There are several other matchups that could have been for the divisional title.
Let's look at all the games:
MIA @ NE - means nothing
BUF @ NYJ - Jets need the win
CIN @ BAL - Baltimore needs the win
TB @ NO - important for both teams
CAR @ ATL - Atlanta needs the win
MIN @ DET - not much for anyone other than Detroit fans
OAK @ KC - means nothing
PIT @ CLE - Pittsburgh needs the win
JAC @ HOU - Jacksonville needs the win
ARI @ SF - means nothing
CHI @ GB - both teams need the win
TEN @ IND - Indy may need the win
SD @ DEN - means nothing
DAL @ PHI - Philly needs the win
NYG @ WAS - Giants need the win
STL @ SEA - both teams need the win
That's 5 of 16 with nothing on the line as far as the playoffs. Of the 11 other games, 8 of them only involve one team playing for the playoffs or seeding and 3 have both teams needing a win.
Now lets compare that to last year's week 17:
Fairly random except for most teams playing within the conference. A normal random weekend would have 11 of 16 games intraconference so 14 of 16 was probably intentional.
IND @ BUFF - meant nothing
NO @ CAR - meant nothing
JAC @ CLE - meant nothing
PHI @ DAL - both teams needed a win
CHI @ DET - meant nothing
NE @ HOU - both teams needed a win
PIT @ MIA - both teams needed a win
NYG @ MIN - meant nothing
CIN @ NYJ - both teams needed a win
SAN @ STL - meant nothing
ATL @ TB - meant nothing
GB @ ARI - meant nothing
KC @ DEN - Denver needed a win
BAL @ OAK - Baltimore needed a win
WAS @ SD - meant nothing
TEN @ SEA - meant nothing
That was 10 of 16 games that meant nothing. Of the other six games, in 4 of them both teams needed a win and only 2 just involved one of the two teams. None of the games last year were a winner-take-the-division game except the Dallas-Philly game which was one of the few intradivisional games. But both of those teams had already clinched the playoffs.
You can't say that having all divisional game in the final weekend this year made things more interesting but it is hard for me to see how making things more random helps.
No matter where you go, there you are.

And rob us of the beauty of games like the 1997 season finale between the Jets and Lions, which was actually a winner advances to the playoffs, loser goes home contest...... despite the fact that it was an interconference game!!!!! I love oddities like that.....

I still remember (and miss) the days when the entire last month of the baseball season was nothing but divisional games. Of course, that was back in the days when there were only four divisions and no wild card team. --Boblittlebeast13 wrote:And rob us of the beauty of games like the 1997 season finale between the Jets and Lions, which was actually a winner advances to the playoffs, loser goes home contest...... despite the fact that it was an interconference game!!!!! Don't forget the criteria that it only applied during the times when each division had an even number of teams. The AL hasn't had that opportunity since 1976....

Don't forget the criteria that it only applied during the times when each division had an even number of teams. The AL hasn't had that opportunity since 1976....

Well done, sir. A totally deserved win after you took control in week 9 and then held on the rest of the way.Bob78164 wrote:I'd like to thank the Academy . . . . --Bob

Re: NFL Pick'em Contest standings
Thanks. Obviously I had more than my share of luck along the way, particularly in the early weeks of the season. Then when kusch made his furious charge, picking up 10 points in 3 weeks, I thought we'd have a real fight to the finish.andrewjackson wrote:Well done, sir. It was fun, and it kept me engaged with the NFL in a way I haven't been for several years. If someone hosts it again next year, I'm sure I'll play. Thanks for taking the initiative this year, aj. --Bob

Re: NFL Pick'em Contest standings
Well that sucked. The Rams lost four games before this one by a total of ten points. 4, 2, 1 and 3. Win just one of these games......
