Howard Stern comments on WWTBAM

#1 Post by takinover » Mon Feb 04, 2008 3:43 am

I was listening to a replay of an old show. This is from October 4, 2000. Note the last statement made by Robin Quivers.

Howard and Robin on WWTBAM.

Howard and Robin on WWTBAM.
Could we get a transcript? I wouldn't listen to Howard Stern directly if he were announcing the Second Coming.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

It's late, I can't sleep, and I have experience with transcripts and the Bored. Sounds like a perfect combination to me:

Howard: I watched, uh, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire last night, and there's a very depressing
element to that show that...all of the contestants are either way fat, overweight or grotesquely ugly.

Robin: You know, you sit there and you watch, and you say, "These people eat a lot of potato chips."

Howard: Yeah.

Robin: You know, they look like they...couch potatoes!

Howard: Makes you believe that all of America is just fat, and, if not, lacking in dental work.

Robin: (laughs) You thought it was just England. It's America too.

Howard: Yeah. That's an unusual group that volunteers for that show. (pause) Ummmm....

Robin: You can tell they're getting their contestants by phone.

Howard: Yes.

I was wondering how a seven year old quote could possibly get my blood boiling.

Now I know.

Of course, you realize that by inference, Stern insulted his listeners who sit by their radios and call in. But then, he has made his undeservedly lucrative career insulting his listeners every time he speaks. He's not worth your time, Marley.

Ah, but it's how he so elegantly expresses the views of TPTB and how this flashback contrasts to what we have today.

Aren't the WE/WE/WE/WEs cute?

Yes, I remember them from the taping. "Perky" comes to mind. And the WE-to-the-fourth-power made me cringe. Take heart, there are better couples to follow.

Stern and Quivers are so Adonis- and Aphrodite-like? As the saying goes, they have good faces for radio.

must have read my mind
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The WE/WE/WE/WE couple seemed like caricatures of "perky," with a tinge of desperate intensity that I found frightening. I had to curl into a fetal position in front of the television set and whimper, "Don't smile. Please don't smile again."

Well, I'm fat, and I've eaten my share of potato chips.

No problems with either.

I just find it funny that two people who are not particularly stunning in the looks department made these comments.

Robin is far from what I'd call slim.

But she's had that nice augmentation done, so I guess she feels that ought to count for something.
