Lyrically Speaking - 2/1/08
Here is the next edition of Free For All Friday. All 20 of these songs were playing on the variety of Music Choice channels I have while I was flipping through them on January 18th (Except for #20, whch was actually supposed to be in last week's game, but oh well). This game is open until Monday morning....
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....
1. You look at every face in a crowd
Some shine and some keep you guessin'
Waiting for someone to come into focus
Teach you your final love lesson
2. With a little love, and some tenderness
We'll walk upon the water
We'll rise above the mess
3. My baby moves at midnight
goes right on till the dawn
My woman takes me higher
my woman keeps me warm
4. When situations never change
Tomorrow looks unsure
Don't leave your destiny to chance
What are you waiting for
The time has come to make or break
5. But when she puts her arms around me,
I can, somehow, rise above it
Yeah man, when I got that little girl standing right by my side,
You know, I can tell the whole wide world, and shout it,
6. But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
Cos really I'm sad, Oh I'm sadder than sad
7. Oh, won't you come with me
And take my hand
Oh, won't you come with me
And walk this land
Please take my hand
8. I'm bouncing on my toe
Watch me super soak that ho
I'm gonna pass it to Arab
Then he's gonna pass it to don loc (loc)
9. There's a love less defined,
And its yours and its mine,
Like the sun.
And at the end of the day
10. So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who's feeling down
But he knows where she's going as she's leaving
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town.
11. Oh . . . mmm
I know a place
Ain't nobody cryin'
Ain't nobody worried
Ain't no smilin' faces
12. I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know if you know what I mean
13. When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
14. Look at the way,
We gotta hide what we're doin'.
'Cause what would they say,
If they ever knew and so we're
15. There goes my baby, there goes my heart
They’re gone forever, so far apart
16. At home there are seventeen-year-old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called The Disciples
High on crack, totin' a machine gun
17. We try to hustle them, try to bustle them, try to cuss them
The cops want someone to bust down on Orleans Avenue
Another day, another dollar, another war, another tower
Went up where the homeless had their homes
18. I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It's the only way to live in...
19. And you're a very sexy girl
That's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights
But you won't get there for free
20. Tonight you're mine completely
You give your love so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

Personally, I MUCH prefer Carole King's version. Slower, more pensive, just sweeter, IMO. There's nothing wrong with the Shirelles' version, but Carole's version (on "Tapestry," FTR) is different and (again, IMO) better.

Re: ANSWERS/POINTS
That's what got me on Only the Lonely. I've been doing better on this game since I've actually been reading all the lines (sometimes it's the last line that gives it to me) but after "there goes my baby" the Everly Brothers wouldn't leave my head even though the other words sounded wrong. Even after I'd looked at the other answers and gathered that it was Only the Lonely, I STILL couldn't sing it to any other melody than Bye Bye Love. I was watching a four (!) hour Tom Petty thing on Sundance yesterday and seeing Roy Orbison finally jogged my head and I was able to come up with making the line fit into Only the Lonely.
