Since we're all book lovers here, I thought you'd enjoy reading the opening of The Winter Room by Garyl Paulsen. It won the Newbery Honor sometime back and a teacher reminded me of what a book should do for us. Paulsen did a great job of putting it into words in his preface:

I like it!

During first grade this year, my son's teachers have been trying to get the kids to use "juicy words". This passage is a more elaborate way of advancing that idea. My son has mastered the fundamentals (punctuation, capitalization, and transitory words, for example). However, he still does not flavor his writing with that next step of description. It is fun to get him to expand his writing by asking him questions (What color is the dolphin? How does it feel? Does he have a name? He's jumping? How high?)

I like the idea of calling them "juicy words". I just loved the intro cuz it put the reader right in the scene immediately and gave you a taste of what was to come.

I will use the "juicy word" description as ammo to try and sell a reluctant reader. Thanks.
