Democrat Debate

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Mon Jan 21, 2008 8:51 pm

I think the election will be most interesting. Barack Obama is a pistol. Way sharper, on point and snarkier than Hill and John. Very intriguing.

Oh, and I don't think any of the Republican candidates are pistols. Some may have snarky possibilities, but I'm hoping they have on point possibilities as well.

I'm surprised that no one has responded to this.

I didn't watch the debate.

If it was tonight, we went the the mall to get Maddie "court clothes" followed by a trip to Cheesecake Factory for dinner.

I am refraining as much as I can from posting in political threads. It isn't you or your perspective, which I liked. I inevitably get my feelings hurt in these things, so I'm mostly staying out for now.

Ron Paul is a pistol, a little one. But you have a point, that there aren't many zingers in the Republican bunch.

Skoop, you're probably right. In the past I've been an asshole at times and have gotten way too engaged in stuff I shouldn't.

For some reason, I don't have any passionate feelings about anyone this time other than I want someone to watch our back. Except for Hillary-she's not my fave. I think most all of them are lying sumbitches on most all issues, or flipfloppers, on both sides, so I'm looking for entertainment, I guess. Up to a point.

I think heinies may be the operative word on all discussions this election period. For whatever reasons. Heinies all around! Whoo hooo!

Very interesting.

I didn't see the debate, just heard a brief exchange on the radio on my way to somewhere at 7:00.

I would have preferred Richardson or Kucinich, but I'll be happy with Edwards, Clinton, or Obama.

I love it that Colorado has thrown in with Super Tuesday. Four years ago, we couldn't have been more irrelevant, but now -- Obama has a paid staffer here through Feb. 5, and others are sending literature, although not staff.

I think Kucinich is questionable, honestly, and Richardson has the Peregrine connection which isn't so good. His bro in law was involved in the shady crud that occured during the Arthur Andersen, indictments all around stuff and he (Richardson) was on the board of directors. It sort of soured us on it (Jeff worked for Peregrine for awhile).

I've heard two places, if Clinton gets the nomination, Richardson is her preferred running mate. He was smart to bow out and take it easy. He might be a good running mate for Obama or Edwards also. PAFBoy has run the numbers, and says all the Democrats need is a couple of SW states from 2004, if all the reds stay red and the blues stay blue otherwise. Richardson would deliver NM and probably one other state like Nevada or AZ.

I am curious if Clinton, Obama or Edwards would ask each other to be running mate. I still think they have not burned all their bridges, and can work together, though my sense is that Edwards would not accept the VP position. He tried that once already. I think if poverty is his real passion, he could do more good as ambassador to the UN, or secretary of something.

I am an Edwards gal all the way so weigh my comments accordingly. I didn't get a chance to see the debate tonight but watched some you tube stuff.

Holy shit! I don't think Hil and Obama will ever heal the wounds made tonight. I personally think they got way too personal because they're both in it for such personal reasons. Since they both will make major history by winning the nomination and then perhaps becoming president they have both struck me as more personally invested with their egos more fragile. Edwards is angry, but you can't make him angry in debate by snarking on him. He doesn't go personal as much as they did. His mission keeps him focused better, I think.

Did anyone notice that when the candidates were standing up, they were going after each other tooth and nail, but in the second half, when they were sitting down, it was much more restrained, and frankly boring.

That's been the pattern at other debates as well. Those where the candidates have been seated have been more low key, as if it's tougher to get nasty when you're sitting down.

I won't get into the merits, but from a theater standpoint, the fireworks are fun to watch.

I wish that the Dems would take a page from the Ronald Reagan campaign notebook: "Thou shalt not speak evil of thy fellow" Democrats. All I hear when I read about Clinton and Obama going tooth-and-nail after each other is a bunch of Republican campaign ads in the summer and fall.

I didn't realize the caucus was in Vegas before I booked my trip. I skipped all the festivities.

I was playing a slot machine when an old woman with a Hillary button sat down, and everyone else got up and left. It's not like she was contagious or anything.

I was contagious. I sat next to a guy who coughed and sneezed the whole way, and I'm sick as a dog. The smoke in Vegas didn't help matters....

Somebody on the Imus show this morning observed, comparing the youthful visage of Obama to the, well, mature look of Hillary, "I get the feeling she's running for president because it's on her Bucket List."
I am about 25% sure of this.

Yeah, well, that's not all I brought back. My new avatar is my new favorite game. I never play table games, but I saw two non-smoking women at a table and sat down, and hit 4 10's about a dozen hands in and scooped up $1800!

And I lost 3 pounds from all the walking. Bonus!

AND I hit quad 8's on Pick 'em Poker and won $150... :P :P :P :P

All the new stuff I tried was kind to me. The only old favorite that came across was Popcorn Slotto at the Hilton. That was another $100.

You can tell I had a blast, even though I am paying with fever and chills and body aches and jet lag (I woke up at 3 or 3:30 every morning, even though I tried staying up until midnight....... )

DING! DING! DING! Ear wins the kewpie doll! :)

I watched all of the highlights of these debates, stump speeches, and responses in the emdia, and I see an arsenal of weapons to be used against Obama (or Clinton). At this point, if I was a Democrat, I would be hoping that Obama prevails.

On a barely-related note, I watched "Air Force One" this weekend. I think that only McCain and Fred Thompson would be able to re-take a hijacked plane personally from terrorists. Maybe Huckabee as well (as hunts bears and skydives, as does his wife.) All of the Democrats woefully fail this crucial hypothetical test of Presidential aptitude.

Totally. You all know that I am a total right wing nut job and there just isn't anyone right wing enough for me. I like Mike Huckabee but I don't think he has much of a chance. I suppose that I could look away whilst pulling the lever for John McCain. He ain't my fave. But he's better than Mitt Romney. Ick. He reminds me of a slick televangelist. I'm not fond of the Mormon thing either. (I know...I know...)

Hillary makes me ill. I haven't liked her since the very beginning when she and Bill went on 60 Minutes and she went on that rant about not being the little woman and not staying home to bake cookies and all that. She had the rudest, most condescending tone ever. I mean, what the hell is wrong with staying at home to bake cookies? I like being the little woman.

Camille Paglia and I don't agree on everything (surprise, surprise!) but here she hit the nail on the head:

A lot of Republicans are hoping that Obama prevails. Hillary has high negatives, but everything bad about her is pretty much out in the open. A lot of people hate her, but there aren't a lot who liked her three or six months ago who hate her now.

Obama, on the other hand, is largely an unknown quantity to most people, other than his packaged hope and change speech. The negatives about him, the Rezko deals, his present votes, the way he conveniently tap dances around the issues, are just starting to surface, and there will be plenty of room for that to expand, given the Republicans' access to Fox News and Talk Radio to pound their point home every day.

Rudy Giuliani looked good to a lot of people on the surface (Mr. 9/11), but his popularity plummeted like a rock (very possibly the biggest collapse in recent electoral history) once people got to know him. Obama doesn't have as many skeletons in the closet as Rudy, but he doesn't have to drop as precipitously to lose handily in a general election.

Hillary can win over a lot of people nationally, as she did in New York, by merely showing them she isn't the devil incarnate. Remember that a lot of the enmity against Hillary dates back 8 to 16 years, and for a lot of people it's a soft dislike rather than a hard current one.

There's plenty who definitely won't vote for her, but the vast majority of them would wind up voting Republican anyway (albeit with a bit more of a show of "considering" their options).

Hillary can and will dish it out, and she has the means and the determination to get her message across the way no other Democrat can.

Absolutely nothing "wrong" with that choice. It's a noble one.

What is wrong is when society expects you to do it, and sends gobs of messages there is something wrong with you if you don't want to play that role, or want to play it along with some others.
