Lyrically Speaking - 1/18/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 18, 2008 6:52 am

It's Free For All Friday, so here are 20 songs I heard while flipping through my Music Choice channels on January 8th. I was kinda shaking my head when I went through this list while compiling the lyrics for it last weekend, as I fear this is going to be a rough one. But next Friday's looks to be a lot better....

1 point title/1 point artist, and this game's open until Monday morning.....

1. Darling, I never showed you
Assumed you'd always be there
I took your presence for granted
But I always cared
And I miss the love we shared

2. I'll be the sun
Shining on you
Hey Cinderella
Step in your shoe
I'll be your non-stop lover
Get it while you can
Your non-stop miracle
I'm your man

3. All the dreams we held so close
Seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear

4. Don't you ever feel sad,
Lean on me when times are bad.
When the day comes and you're down,
In a river of trouble and about to drown

5. She said it's cold
It feels like Independence Day
And I can't break away from this parade

6. Girl this ain't no dance floor
this a candy sto'
And I'm really geeked up
And I got more dro
I pop, I roll
It's soft I know

7. I just looked in the mirror
Things aren't looking so good
I'm looking California
And feeling Minnesota

8. Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight's hitting something
That's been known to change the weather

9. I can cast a spell
With secrets you can't tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you

10. I never knew love could be so sweet
It never made a difference to me
But ever since the day that you appeared
I'm telling you made the difference
Now love is so clear

11. Don't Push Me Around, If You Don't Mind
But You Keep On Doin' It To Me All The Time
I Don't Know Much, But I Can Say
You Got Me Feelin' Like A Fool Left To Pay

12. Oh baby, baby, baby, love is a magic word, yeah
Few ever find in a lifetime
But from that very first look in your eyes
I knew you and I had but one heart
Only our bodies were apart

13. I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night

14. Looking at you, holding my breath,
For once in my life,I'm scared to death,
I'm taking a chance,letting you inside.

15. I know your window and I know its late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light of the four way
and watch them as they fall, oh baby

16. She's got a face that shows that she knows
she's heard every line
tenderly she talks on the phone
there's a way to walk that says "stay away"
and a time to go around the long way

17. Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white

18. Sometimes you're crazy and you wonder why
I'm such a baby
'Cause the Dolphins make me cry
Well, there's nothing I can do

19. There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love

20. Can't let go and it doesn't matter how I try
I gave it all so easily to you my love
To dreams that never will come true
Am I strong enough to see it through
Go crazy is what I will do

13. I was tryin' to find my way home

Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm - Crash Test Dummies. I saw them open for Billy Bragg and whatever outfit Michael Franti was in back then (I think Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy). It was weird. Two friends had given me a pair of concert tickets each for my birthday, to two different shows on the same night. I rode into the city not knowing which ones I was going to scalp and which ones I was going to use. Ended up selling the Chili Peppers tickets. I think I made the right call. Billy Bragg is amazing in concert, at least he was back then.

18. Sometimes you're crazy and you wonder why
I'm such a baby
'Cause the Dolphins make me cry
Well, there's nothing I can do
"Lots of People Rip Off Bob Dylan, But I Can Do It More Blatantly Than Any Of Them" (aka Only Want To Be With You) - Hootie and the Blowfish

Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love
How Will I Know - Whitney Houston. Now I've got 2 Whitney Houston songs. I predict nothing good will come of that. Apropos of nothing, Downtown Train just came onto my iPod

20. Can't let go and it doesn't matter how I try
I gave it all so easily to you my love
To dreams that never will come true
Am I strong enough to see it through
Go crazy is what I will do
If I Can't Have You - The Bee Gees

Well, OK, I've only even ever heard about 4 of them, & the one that was really bugging me (Miracles) I'd have got if I held this window open all day, but the board, or some local-windows-genie, doesn't allow me to.

I'd always tuned out of the ear-whisper stuff in "Angie" anyway (if Jagger got that close to my ear I'd scream), the "Bennie" stuff was from the filler section, is this the "If I Can't Have You I don't want nobody, baby" song, because if it is I can't rememer any of this stuff from it, etc, etc.

There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Spoiler
1. Not off to a good start

2. No, not a good start at all

3. Angie - The Rolling Stones (About David Bowie's wife)

4. Hold On (I'm Coming) - Sam & Dave

5. One Headlight - The Wallflowers

6. This ain't no disco either

7. Obviously from the Feeling Minnesota soundtrack, but I got nothin'

8. Bennie & The Jets - Elton John

9. Nothing here...

10. ...here...

11. ...or here

12. Miracles - Jefferson Starship

13. Radio Nowhere - Bruce Springsteen

14. Nope

15. Downtown Train - Rod Stewart also Patti Smyth, and written by performed by Tom Waits

16. A Girl in Trouble is a Temporary Thing - Romeo Void (Beast trying to sneak another Romeo Viod tune pass me.)

17. Mmm, mmm, mmm - Crash Test Dummies (I like Superman's Song much better)

18. I Only Want to Be With You - Hootie & The Blowfish

19. How Will I Know - Whitney Houston (Not even sure why or how I know this one)

20. If I Can't Have You - Yvonne Elliman (Penalize me if you must, but I had to look up the spelling of her name. Onetime backup singer to Eric Clapton and either or both in the Jesus Christ Superstar movie/Broadway thing.)
Well that was pretty bad, don't care though, The Giants are going to the Super Bowl!
Enjoy every sandwich

That's been known to change the weather
Bennie & the Jets - Elton John

9. I can cast a spell
With secrets you can't tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you
I'm Every Woman - Chaka Khan (I knew this had been covered at least once, but wasn't sure who all did it. Apparently, one of those versions was done by Whitney Houston, who just happens to have her own song later in this game, so I guess Whitney will just have to be our first double winner in this LS...)

10. I never knew love could be so sweet
It never made a difference to me
But ever since the day that you appeared
I'm telling you made the difference
Now love is so clear
Can't Stop - After 7 (Nelly was the only one to get the song, and answered Babyface, who it appears wrote the song. I can't remember if I gave him credit or not, but I'm typically looking for the artist who actually performed the song and made it famous, not who wrote it. Doing a little more research, it appears Babyface was the brother of the After 7 band members. Funny thing is, I can't place this song now to save my life, but I did recognize it when it was playing on my TV 2 weeks ago....)

11. Don't Push Me Around, If You Don't Mind
But You Keep On Doin' It To Me All The Time
I Don't Know Much, But I Can Say
You Got Me Feelin' Like A Fool Left To Pay
Say What You Will - Fastway

12. Oh baby, baby, baby, love is a magic word, yeah
Few ever find in a lifetime
But from that very first look in your eyes
I knew you and I had but one heart
Only our bodies were apart
Miracles - Jefferson Starship (I will probably answer every song by them as "Jefferson Starship" because I hate playing the name game with them)

13. I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night
Radio Nowhere - Bruce Springsteen

14. Looking at you, holding my breath,
For once in my life,I'm scared to death,
I'm taking a chance,letting you inside.
First Time - Lifehouse

15. I know your window and I know its late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light of the four way
and watch them as they fall, oh baby
Downtown Train - Rod Stewart

16. She's got a face that shows that she knows
she's heard every line
tenderly she talks on the phone
there's a way to walk that says "stay away"
and a time to go around the long way
A Girl in Trouble - Romeo Void (It took TiV, the last player, to prevent this from being our second shutout of the year. So that's Romeo Void twice in 3 games. If Romeo Void appears again in this game, I'll eat my notebook...)

17. Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm - Crash Test Dummies (Surprised so many people got this song since I wouldn't recognize it in lyrical or musical form... but I did know it was their biggest hit)

18. Sometimes you're crazy and you wonder why
I'm such a baby
'Cause the Dolphins make me cry
Well, there's nothing I can do
I Only Wanna Be With You - Hootie and the Blowfish

19. There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love
How Will I Know - Whitney Houston

20. Can't let go and it doesn't matter how I try
I gave it all so easily to you my love
To dreams that never will come true
Am I strong enough to see it through
Go crazy is what I will do
If I Can't Have You - Yvonne Elliman

The scores weren't quite as bad as I'd have imagined, but it was still overall an ugly Friday game. I promise this Friday's game will be better, and we may even get a few scores in the 30's for it....
