He handed the spatula to his fiancee, Kate, who's in the audience, and went in another room to talk for a couple minutes. Kate came in, all excited, asking "Did you get a job?" Phil replied, "I don't know, I think it might be better!"

I saw that and I was thinking, well if he got that wrong he has a good challenge on his hands. Only reason I got it is because most people think a spider is an insect so figured it being the first tier it had to be that.

Although the national unemployment rate is around 10% it's amazing the high percentage that have been on BAM lately.

You imagine correctly.

I don't know is anyone has tried challenging a question within the confines of TDC, but contestants would be throwing their fate into the tender mercies of TPTB by doing that. Far safer would be trying to cram in as much of a protest as you could within the time limit:

"There's a spider in Little Miss Muffet but a spider is an arachnid which is not an insect but you obviously want me to say B which I will under protest, final answer!"

Practice that in under 15 seconds, future Hot Seaters.

I suspect his odd comment was a joking reference to the last-minute answer switch that happened a few contestants prior to Phil:

Julia: Umm, no, eyeglasses, final answer.

Meredith: Now, why did you change your mind?

Julia: It had to be one of the two, but I used my Double Dip, already.

There was also a pause and a blank look before this non-answer. I suspect that Julia heard some audience rumbling after she went with "suits" and decided to switch based on that reaction. I couldn't detect anything obvious on the audio, but the audience seemed to laugh knowingly as soon as she switched. Meredith's tone when she questioned the change may have indicated she knew as well. I say more power to Julia if she pulled off an extra ATA, but only getting to 10K with it seems a bit of an underachievement.

With three contestants between them, I think it's possible that Phil was within earshot for the very end of Julia's taping.
