Progressive stands for progressive scan as opposed to interlacing scan which is 1080i. Interlacing scans all the odd lines first, then all the even lines. Progressive scan scans them all in order for a sharper picture. Almost all current HDTV pictures are 1080p, although some older CRT sets like mine are 1080i (some cheaper plasma sets are 720p, which only has 720 lines of resolution instead of 1080).
