American Idol is on tonight

This is the first season that we'll be able to watch it the day it airs. For the last three years we saw it the day after. Season 5 was the first season we started watching (Daughtry, etc) Some of the internet news sites weren't so nice as the people here, and didn't bother to put a spoiler space when reporting on it. I tried to avoid seeing the results, but sometimes it wasn't possible. Another fun thing is that we'll be able to vote this year too!

Yeah, the simple things make me happy.

John, please. Can't you just fade into obscurity like the rest of the rejects I threw off this show, and leave these poor suffering people alone so they can watch the string of even worse rejects I plan on airing the next few weeks?

I had completely forgotten that Fox has sound issues. DH remembered that Fox had this problem in the past, though perhaps not for all of its shows. Commercials = loud, Show = fuzzy and lower in sound . Heck, I didn't know AI was on Fox until now.

I think Simon hit the nail on the head when he said that there are too many that just want to get on TV. After all these years it is still hard to believe that some of these people actually think they can sing! I thought the guy with the deep baritone was hysterical. I didn't think he thought he was funny but this was definitely a case of people laughing at him rather than with him. I also think that while some people have decent voices they tend to yell and scream the song rather than sing it thinking a powerful voice will sway the judges. It doesn't. I didn't think there were any that I would have taken that they did not and vice versa. I think there may have been a top-24'er or two in this bunch that I saw. I do wish, though, that they would show more of the selectees and less of the idiots.

It doesn't help that the local judging panels are instructed to let through a lot of such folks to the Big 3 judges, which further reinforces their belief they can sing. It's why I quit watching the rejects episodes.

Probably true. Hopefully, one day, this will stop and all we will see are the ones that can sing mixing in a few of the comedy acts - not the other way around. All I can hope for is that the audience tires of the foolishness and clamors for more real voices.

The weirdo who sang Jefferson Airplane was something else. They actually were nice to her and basically told her she wasn't terrible, just not right for the show. No insults or anything. She reacted like they had ripped her apart!

There were a couple who stood out. Kristy Lee ("Amazing Grace") was good. Angela's story touched me..it will be hard for voters to keep that separate from how she actually performs. Too early for me to have any personal favorites, but from an objective look and listen, I can see Chris, the young man toward the end of hour two who sang "Follow Me", going very far. He says he likes Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana, but he also has a soulful tinge to his voice. And yes, the ladies are gonna love him. If he can be as versatile as early indications seem, he could be around a long time. Like Simon said, he already looks like a star. Watch out for him.

If it weren't for the idiots, I wouldn't watch at all.

I must be the only one in America that doesn't really watch this show, and because of that my family usually doesn't watch it either. I find the jokesters interesting and funny, and the only real reason to watch. To me, although most of the finalists have a nice voice, most don't really have a tremendous amount of talent. Ultimately most do not write their own songs and the songs they wind up recording son't seem all that good. I realize that this is just me, I'm VERY critical when it comes to music and truely believe that 95% (it's probably closer to 99%) of what is being played on the radio is pure junk. Obviously I'm the one who is alone on this show, since America can't get enough of it.

You're not the only one. It's not on in our household, either, mostly because my musical tastes fossilized in the 1970s and I'm not interested in hearing retreads (and bad ones at that) of songs I didn't like back in the day.

I saw that guy and thought if he could sing even one note, he was in. Hot Damn! He has breath-control issues, but the raw material is there.

He needs the facial hair, because he is just too pretty for words...

Ain't this a hoot? I have now watched AI a total of three minutes in seven years and it was Amazing Grace girl!! She will be in the finals and maybe win.

I watched yesterday because of the Philly angle.

I know they've done this in years past, but what they did to the one girl (the one who played football in school) with the mother on oxygen was unconsionable. Especially since I know these folks have to go through two auditions before they ever get to the Big Three, and so it gets reinforced in their minds that they can actually sing.

What they did to that girl was even more mean-spirited than I have seen them be in the past.

Reminded me again of why I actually support the efforts of such websites like VotefortheWorst.com. Think of how many actually talented people might not get through because the producers delibertaely let these talentless folks in to be made fun of.

Won't watch it again after last night.

Call me naive, but I was thinking that it actually would work well for the family. There are probably a great many philanthropic people that would see that, and get involved to help the family.

On the other hand, the illness of the mother was not identified, and if she is ill because of the obesity, then the family is more to blame for setting the daughter up and using her for a dogsbody (sorry Annie)

The guy that defolliated was scary, as was the guy who sang the stalker song.

That's how the show is trying to spin it. I'm not buying it- they could have done all that without setting the girl up.

Not buying the "it's the family's fault" line either. The show has more power than the family. They didn't have to be complicit even if the family was "setting the girl up".

The show does this because they know it draws in viewers, nothing more. Nothing good about it in the slightest.

I still am today.

I normally don't watch until they are down to like 10 singers, if at all.

Although I do like Chris Daughtry.

She had a very strange affect. Or maybe lack of affect. She cracked me up by announcing her song selection as "I Ain't Going Nowhere", or something like that.

I thought for sures the guy getting the wax job would scream out "Kelly Clarkson!". I was disappointed.

But, as usual, the song montage ROCKED!!!11

According to today's Philadelphia Inquirer, the stalker guy is a professional comedian whose nickname is Pauly Nipple. (I don't want to know how he got that name.) I thought he was creepy, not funny. Well, pretend creepy isn't as bad as the real thing.
