The "crop-e" pronunciation came along later, when fishermen started getting all politically correct.

It is still "crap-e" in Atlanta, at least at my pond. And while the yo-yo's on "Real Housewifes of Atlanta" might not know this you can be sure that native real housewives of Atlanta would.
