Carl's Jr. was founded in Los Angeles in 1941 by Carl Karcher. Hardee's was founded in Greenville, NC in 1960 by Wilbur Hardee. The two companies had separate histories until 1997, when the parent of Carl's Jr. acquired Hardee's. The two brands maintain separate identities and separate geographic ranges, though their business operations and some menu items are similar. After Paris Hilton did her writhing in a car wash commercial for Carl's Jr., it was also shown in the East as a Hardee's commercial.
