Are you saying we have a double standard here?

I used to do the daily crossword in our pitiful local newspaper, but quit when I could almost do it with my
eyes closed. I never did move on to bigger or better challenges. Prolly should have.

Pretty sure it was on one of the old incarnations of the Bored, but we've been here so long that it's possible it was here.

Double standard? That's putting it mildly.

Can't believe anyone would accuse Cal of not being able to finish a Sunday Times crossword. Must've been before my time, or during one of my "breaks."

The whole double standard thing sounds kinda ghostish, though....

You need to replace #21 with this clue: Happy Days actor Donny [4].

Though your statement is a general rule, it does get broken on rare occasions (such as last Dec. 25, for instance, when the pattern was designed to resemble a Christmas tree).

(And speaking of lb's avatar... shouldn't that be an 8-letter word?)

Hey LB.... a big woohoo to you!

I actually do the Sunday Magazine puzzle too. I get really close most weeks. Our local library copies the puzzle, I pick them up on Tuesdays, and I give myself a week to complete it (then check the week after in said library).

It is amazing that you can be completely stymied on one day, and come back the next and see something you hadn't thought of, and that leads to many more clue-solving.

Again, CONGRATS!

Moonie, paying it forward for the Wheel Mobile visit somewhere in the future.

I hear that! I sometimes work on it over a span of two nights, and each break or lunch I sit down and something comes to me right away that didn't before. It's weird how it works, but the one I solved this week was one I hit a huge roadblock on not even midway through. It's all about perseverence....

Now to see if it takes another 2 years to get another one.....

Nope, no symmetry in any direction, top/bottom or left/right. I'll see if I can figure out a way to post the image when I get home later.
edited to add:

Here's a link to a site with more info about the NYT crossword than you probably ever wanted or cared to know! (The links to unsolved puzzles require subscription to the NYT Premium Puzzles page -- which is well worth it for crossword fans -- but the rest of the site should be readily available).

Nope.... just 7 months! I finished this Sunday's NYT puzzle on first break last night and it became my second perfecto!

I think they get a kick out of it. They always ask if I'm working "the easy one" or "the hard one", as there are two Sunday puzzles in the St. Louis paper, and I work them both over the course of a few nights. Of course, the guy across from me just wants me to point out the dirty words in the puzzle..... it amuses me too though.....

I remember tackling the old Sunday Times puzzle with the unabridged dictionary, almanac, atlas, and bible nearby. I always loved Will Shortz's Games Magazine, so I "got" his style right away and had more success with hs puzzles. I can't think if I ever really tried to finish a whole one, and my dad started taking my papers a few years ago so I didn't even get to do the Sudokus. Now he gave up on the papers since his eyesight is fading, so maybe I'll get a crack at the puzzles again before my dementia gets too bad... :P

From the header, I thought this was going to be about a trivia question we had last night...

"Eat my shorts" was popularized by Bart Simpson. But what 1985 film also popularized the phrase?
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Congratulations!
I'll add my gratz also. Our local "alternative" newspaper prints the Sundy NYT crossword on Wednesdays, so I get them then and work them.

Whichever John Hughes film came out in 1985, I'm guessing...
