Lyrically Speaking Winter Extravaganza 2010 Official Rules!

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 2:27 am

Welcome everybody, come one and come all!
To Lyrically Speaking, you'll have quite a ball
The Winter Extravaganza comes for the third time
And just to please Fanny, these rules will all rhyme

The game will run weekdays, so no games on Sundays
The Shithouse Rats will now even like Mondays
There'll be a different theme for each day of the week
If you look just below, you'll get a sneak peek

Meet the Band Mondays are a change from the past
We all knew the Retro games just would not last
In an homage to KT, I'll rip off his style
And will gather up songs from one band in a pile

Half will be one group, the other half another
That's 2 bands on Mondays, go tell your mother!
There'll be fill in the blank for an extra score
Each game will be worth 48 points or more!

Tuesdays are not gone, Lynyrd be damned
A common word shall be within each title crammed
Tuesday Wordplay is quite easy to handle
And I got to admit it was ripped off from Vandal

Speaking of which, if my theft is not tacky
There's fun Wednesdays ahead which are sure to be wacky
On humpday each week, I'll let the Merry Men reign
With a game of their own so ghost can complain

Thursdays for themes, some easy some clever
Most will be figured out, but some will just never
A bonus of 3 points is there for the taking
For solving the theme, the score you'll be making!

Fridays are free for alls, anything goes
There's all kinds of games that I plan to propose
You never know what kind of puzzle I will dump
Like a box of chocolates, just ask Uly Gump

Get used to this routine, 10 weeks will go by
Before my game notebook will ever run dry
It starts on the fourth day of the first month of '10
When will it end? Why March 12th, that's when

The games will be posted quite early each morn
And it won't be 'til next day that I'll blow the horn
When the answers are posted, your time will be up
You'll have plenty of time to finish your cup

I shall post the answers no earlier than five
That's AM Pacific, which Bored Time does jive
The exception is Fridays when you'll have 2 more days
Just make sure by Monday you've posted your plays

There's one point for artist, and for each song name
But there's many more points to be earned in this game
Some games will have extras, which I shall explain
I added a bunch, but did not go insane

There's also a treat at the end of each day
A bonus for 5 points! What more can I say?
Some will be trivia, some personal to me
But they all tie in to that day's game you see

And I have even more, in games where it rocks
I'll include the bonus introduced by Krox
Name another song and artist that fits to the theme
And 2 more points will be more than a dream

But wait there's more, you'll find this quite gnarly
I'll have attendance points, just for you Marley!
They'll be awarded each week, on the last game's scoring
For everyone who tried instead of just snoring

Play just 3 games, and you'll get a big point
Play 4 you'll get three even if you stink up the joint
But if you play all five fine games I offer
I'll dump five whole points straight into your coffer

But there's still more to earn, I'm tipping the scale
Don't forget our buddy, the man J.J. Cale!
You can earn these fine points by making me laugh
By being int'resting, or committing a gaffe

You can earn up to three, conventionally
Unless you are funny exponentially
Then my good friend, I speak just the facts
You'll get 5 JJC's for a fine supermax

At the end of the year, we'll award even more
There's a whopping 10 points for someone to score
The funniest answer in the LS neighborhood
Wins the Shithouse Rats Trophy from its holder elwood

So that's how we'll handle the points and the scoring
Now the rest of the rules might get a bit boring
But they have to be said so there'll be no dispute
And fussing and whining will all be quite moot

There's no cheating involved, that's how LS is done
And it's been that way since the first game in '01
No looking at Google, can't use that song site
You can only use your head be you dull or you bright

Anybody caught cheating shall not this game pass
We'll give them a good toss right out on their ass
Ridicule you'll get and Bored scorn you will earn
Yet some people they just never quite seem to learn

The Phil Collins rule will be used once again
If you know the lead singer even if it's their band
The singer must have had a decent solo career
And it doesn't work in reverse, hey Fanny, you hear?

I'll accept cover versions, if they're somewhat well known
Unless specifically directed, then you're on your own
I apologize for bad lyrics, they happen you know
And for typos as well, please forgive me Esto

Any rules not covered here are ruled on by me
Should they happen to arise, and they will natur'ly
But my judgement is final, you may not appeal
I don't care if you whine, cry, pout, or squeal

But the reason I do this every year for you all
Is to throw in some fun during the long winter squall
And I hope you enjoy this, its quite fun to play
See you all for the first game, coming up on Monday!

You mean you just thought of this format while discussing cavalier poets in chat last night? I'm rather impressed! (But not as much as I'd be if you'd managed to work in the word intercrural. Ha!)

Okay, I might be dumb as a stump, but I still don't completely get this rule!

Does it mean like if the song is Paranoid it would be okay to say Ozzy Osbourne, but if it's Crazy Train you can't say Black Sabbath?

Attendance points!?!?

But I don't want attendance points! Attendance points won't help me kick out all the cellar squatters! It's default non-attendance points that I've been lobbying for; to wit, if you don't prove that you don't know any of the answers by posting in the thread, you're assumed to know at least something, so you get a default point or two. I'll never get the cellar to myself with attendance points! :x

Don't feel dumb Fanny, a lot of people find the Phil Collins rule to be daunting.....

I knew you'd be happy!!!!!!!

BTW, I didn't work it in to my little ditty, but to count as playing, you can't just say "Present" or some such thing, but must actually at least attempt to answer something. You can't be totally lazy and get attendance points....

I had about 3 paragraphs worth of rules written up on the laptop while I was watching TZ and waiting to see if anyone was actually going to show up in chat last night (I was shocked, nobody showed until after midnight last year). After we got the great lines of poetry, I believe I jokingly mentioned that I was writing up the rules in another window and should write them in the form of a sonnet. Well, it isn't a sonnet, but hey, it's poetry by a complete literature putz dammit! And it only took about an hour to do, I guess writing all those Wierd Al parodies over the years helped when it came to thinking of quickie rhymes....

I thought the sonnet remark was just an off the cuff joke. I'm so glad that I.....err, Richard Lovelace inspired you....

Yes, folks, that's what you've been missing out on by being afraid to take on the den of iniquity that is chat. We all sit around and quote 17th century poets...... Freaky!

Oh, gosh, seeing as how I don't want attendance points in the first place, I'll pay very careful attention to this rule. :|

And when I answer "Present" I have read the lyrics and realized that I don't have a clue in the world what the answers are. Now, I can throw in some bogus guesses that I absolutely know are incorrect, but does all that extra effort make it any more clear that my score for the day is a big, fat zero than answering "Present"?

Come on, Marley. Since there's no penalty for wrong answers, walk on the wild side and take some wild guesses. Every now and then, you might get one of them right. If you can't do that, then provide some joke answers when they occur to you, or tell us a story about how you almost, but not quite, know one of the songs. (The answer may come to you while you're typing, too.) If an efficient "present" won't net you attendance points, make us laugh or tell us something new. It's LB's game and LB's rules. You can handle 'em.
