I added the pronunciation note to the transcript in case any other Ohioans, like me, might have expected to hear "eh-ZEEN-yuh", a la Xenia OH. (Xenia is about 70 miles North of Cincinnati)

What is it with contestants from Ohio and wanting to smell the 1,000,000 prop check? At least Exenia didn't get called a "whack job" like I did. :-)

She was barely holding it together after missing that question. It was seemed pretty clear that she was playing aggressively because she needed the cash. :-/

History has a tendency to repeat itself. But I didn't smell it as much as I lovingly grazed it with my finger...

Meredith gave me mine along with the amount that I ended up winning.

Meredith tried encouraging her with a "you did great" comment, but it was obvious from Exenia's face that she didn't think so.

10K: Was this supposed to be easy for some reason I don't get?

I know about & have been to the Badlands of South Dakota; Mt Rushmore is there.

The song "El Paso" talks about our hero riding in "from the Badlands of New Mexico", even though I've been to a lot of places in New Mexico & never heard any referred to as badlands.

So I was expecting one of those states to come up, but they didn't.

The ground covered by rocky spikes that form the South Dakota Badlands is memorably bad, but it doesn't extend into neighboring states, I didn't think. Maybe it does, but pick which one?

PAF a Googler, while scratching my head.

12.5K: Have read several reviews saying that this is mostly a work of fiction, including one of the web-site founders' supposed swimming pool or hot tub or wherever trysts with supermodels.

so good so far

The badlands of Montana are in the southeastern part of the state near the border shared with North and South Dakota and not far from Little Bighorn. Although less eroded and rugged than the area most people knows as the badlands in South Dakota that make up Badlands National Park there are still some rugged areas in Montana as well such as Makoshika State Park which is near the town of Glendive mentioned in the Q.

If you are going to base a guess on Badlands National Park in South Dakota, which seems logical but always potentially dangerous at this level to guess, then I suppose Montana is your best bet as it is the only state in the answer that borders South Dakota.

Of course badlands was a convenient name to apply to any rugged barren appearing area that settlers found little use for. Nevada, Texas and Colorado (as well as Arizona, Utah and New Mexico and most of the rest of the western states) all have areas that are referred to as "badlands".
