I am dissatisfied with the wording of the question about the Alamo. I don't think one can call the Alamo an American defeat. The men who fought were citizens of Mexico who were trying to establish the Republic of Texas.

That being said, I wish I could get a question like that. I knew that the Alamo was taken in 1836, during the Jackson administration.

I agree, though I didn't even notice that problem when I saw the question. I just went straight to the well-known (around here) fact that the siege of the Alamo was in 1836, and that quickly led to Andrew Jackson as the correct answer.

One of the opposing teams at my pub quiz last night also called the error to my attention.

It was not an American defeat. It was a loss by the Texian Army. This is ironic, since our own Andrew Jackson on this board is a proud member of the Texian Army.

An absolute shocker for me. I did not think that the Alamo occurred that far back. I thought it occurred during the Mexican-American War and Polk's administration.

50K: I have enough trouble remembering who died & didn't & who wasn't there; remembering who was president at the time? I was pretty sure it wasn't Monroe; wrong time entirely. I would throw everything I had that I needed to at this, starting with the "expert" just in case they did know.
