I seem to remember a question last season about the BRIC countries-only it was about what the "B" is for-and it was at a higher level.  I was afraid she was going to go with the audience and pick "Illinois" for the state flag question. Good move to Double Dip.  I'm glad she didn't listen to Joel, either. I guess he's never heard of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  I think Oprah was born there (or near there.)Wouldn't have needed a LL until $15K.  Hmm, I think the audience might know something about Star Wars movies. I'd ask them.

I was in complete shock when I saw on the transcript that she had to use a lifeline, and then nearly passed out when I saw the audience results.


Otherwise her performance wasn't mortifying. Living in the south makes it easier to have heard of Hattiesburg of course, so I don't really blame Joel. I have many Korean friends, and "juche" sounds Korean, so I probably would have DD'd there.

Well, I think Joel deserves to get the Traditional Poutine consolation prize. This question really was "What state is Hattiesburg in?" but the question writers had to dress it up with that obscure detail that nobody would know. And then they included that unfortunate word "pioneer" that Joel locked onto. According to Wikipedia:

Founded in 1882 by pioneer lumberman and civil engineer William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg was named in honor of Hardy's wife Hattie.

Hattiesburg is positioned at the fork of the Leaf and Bouie Rivers, and was founded in 1882 by Captain William H. Hardy, a civil engineer. Early settlers to the area were of Scottish, Irish, and English descent who came from Georgia and the Carolinas, attracted by the vast area of virgin pine timberlands.

Yeah, they've got the word "pioneer", too, but in a rather different context.



Anyway, enjoy the poutine, Joel, but I hope you realize that some of us who were raised in NJ have heard of towns that are Elsewhere.

I noticed something else from that Wikipedia page about Hattiesburg:

The region around Hattiesburg was also involved in the nuclear arms race of the Cold War. In the 1960s, two nuclear devices were detonated in the salt domes near Lumberton, Mississippi, about 28 miles southwest of Hattiesburg. Extensive follow-up of the area by the EPA has not revealed levels of nuclear contamination in the area that would be harmful to humans.

I would never have believed this--that nuclear tests were conducted anywhere in the southeast--but they've got a link to to DOE document that confirms it!

Pretty sneaky for a first tier question, but like many of these, the fact that it's on the first tier pretty much tells you the answer. If the answer was something else, even Illinois, it would have been a higher level question (or Washington wouldn't have been a distractor). I don't think they put Illinois in as an intentional distractor; it just worked out that way.

If we go by commutes, then where I live (halfway between Reading and Philadelphia) is WE® territory!

Not that I know of offhand, but after a quick google search...Hattiesville, MS, Hattieville, AR and Hattieville, Belize but I'm not sure what state that is in .
