My VCR did not record again. It passes all "record" tests when I am home. Then fails to turn on for my M-F (that's "Monday through Friday", folks) shows when I'm not home. Yes, I did set a M-F timer setting for a time I would be home just to see if it worked, & it did.

Today I have put the M-F shows, BAM & J!, on the other VCR.

If that doesn't work, I lock cat in my room for the day & see how he likes it. On the theory this may be cat-augmented failure. Unfortunately, I can't close off the living room from him easily. But will try 1st.

Next step, if it ain't the cat, would be a meter to check power fluctuations.

So I missed John Doh.

Sorry about that.

12.5K: Clock jitters. I know La Paz is Bolivia, Ascension (probably misspelled) is Paraguay, can't think of Chile or Equador's capitals so 50/50. I could have got it in time.

100K: Know "baro" has to do with pressure, & assume "pressure loving" (barophile) creatures would live in the deep water, under pressure. Take a deep breath & go for it.

Good Run, JD

Congratulations! You looked like you were having fun, and did great. I also enjoyed Bob's PAF banter and quick answer.

John: Why are you pretty sure about it?

Tom: John, I know it’s not Hawley-Smoot Tariff, it had nothing to do with tariffs. The Hays Code, I never heard of. The Comstock Law. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I don’t think it has anything to do with prohibition. I think it is the Volstead Act.

Was it on this question that Tom added the comment, "I wish my wife answering this because she's the trivia expert"? That was a true What The French? moment for me. Aside from becoming a celebrity attention ho, why did you take this job, Tom, if you're no good a trivia? And, as already been mentioned, this question should have been in a congressman's wheelhouse, if any of them are!
That was my thought as well, Marley. This was certainly a question someone in his position would be more familiar with as opposed to, say, a DWTS ATE, IMHO. More political history than trivia.

Why are you guys complaining? It was in DeLay's wheelhouse, AND he got it. So what's the problem?

Are you going to say he diluted John's confidence with the aside about his wife? Did John seem to hesitate before going with Tom's answer? I can't tell this from just the transcripts.

What the French?!?!?!?!?!?!!??

A more fun question might have been: What was the original name of the first Pope? Then give all of the choices in Aramaic.

What the French?!?!?!?!
Oh, would that be the Avignon Popes?
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Dually posted, here's the video of Bob's PAFing. I apologize for this being a point-and-shoot (I aboslutely detest when other people do it, but just think of it as a modern-day kineoscope) but I can't get it off of the DVR and I figure 1:30 ain't bad ifI'm just posting it for those who haven't seen it.

You're right that he got it and John took his advice (along with the modest confirmation by the ATA), so Tom did his job on this question. Our critique is simply adding a data point to his record as an expert. The comment about his wife addresses his qualifications and commitment as an expert, and we're noting the relative uncertainty of his answer on what should have been a wheelhouse question.

Granted, he wasn't in congress when any of these particular laws were passed, but none of the congressmen who did vote on them were available as experts. :P

Marley, are you proposing a new lifeline to replace PAF? Ask-a-Zombie has a nice ring to it.

Heck, no, I liked the PAF!

And I preferred the STQ to the ATE.

But if TPTB are determined to keep the ATE, I think it's reasonable for contestants to get a choice of who their expert is.

"Hey, Tom DeLay, could you step aside from the Skype camera and let your wife take a shot at it, already?" :P

Ooh!!! Ooh!!! Anybody know what today is? (besides Eugene, who knows what every day is) Today is the 90th anniversary of the date on which Congress overrode President Wilson's veto of the Volstead Act.

That calls for a drink, to celebrate. Oh, wait...

I realize I am about to make a totally subjective observation, for one person's WWOQ is another person's easy question, but at least in IMHO there seems to be one less WWOQ when the expert is a celebrity "expert" than a real "expert." If that is true, I would take a celebrity expert over a real one, if it meant one less insanely difficult question.
But this observation in no way detracts from John Doh great job, for there were some WWOQ in his batch too.

John--good job!! I am just realizing you are from Greer and that Hanzz you will be here for T-day. I am down the road in Anderson--we should try to find a holiday trivia outing and all meet up!!
