Shawna Edwards
Flint, MI
Waitress

Meredith takes a moment to comment on Shawna’s embrace of Kara as she left the Hot Seat, giving Shawna a chance to talk about how all the contestants pull for one another. Nice little glimpse of life in the green room.

IIRC, this also is a question that was used in an prime time Millionaire episode.

Here's an article about Shawna's appearance, including a photo that managed to catch all of Shawna's friends in the background, wearing their custom "Shawndog Millionaire" T-shirts!

She looked very upset at the end. Must have focused on the "centric" instead of the "helio". Felt bad for her.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

"Centric"? I assume you mean "tropic".

I don't always feel that sorry for people who blow it at the lower levels, but I felt bad for her. She seemed just crushed, and as a waitress coming from Flint, MI, I'm sure winning a lot more money would have made a HUGE difference for her. Plus, all her supporters were there for her. I'm just hoping she had not told them she would pay for their trips.

Hmmm. Yeah. TPTB raised the first safehaven from $1K to $5K to make sure contestants could cover the expenses of their trip, but it might not cover the expenses for seven!

Well, we're certainly breezing through that contestant pool, aren't we?! :|

OK, this is one my VCR magically did not record, either because its broken but only when I'm not there, or my kitty cat turns it off, or something.

So I didn't get to see Shawna & how sympathetic she is.

And I knew the answer to this one.

But why leave lifelines?

If you're sure but you're wrong, that's one reason. But if you're not sure, & have lifelines, please use them.

She probably thought she was sure. As has already been mentioned, she probably latched onto the "tropic" part of the word as meaning "near the equator".

FWIW even in the cutthroat days of the Ring of Fire, we all pulled for the contestant in the HS to do well - but to do it quickly.

I don't think Shawna had a clue as to the right answer, unless "tropic" suggested "the Tropics", and that led her to the wrong answer. I wonder what the audience would have done with this one. As for me, nihil obstat®. Three contestants, three leaving with $5K each. Not a good end to the week. But there's one contestant still to come.

IIRC, I don't think anyone used AT, Ken Jennings, the entire episode. And there where at least 3 contestants that had the opportunity. Bizarre episode.
