The Water Horse

#1 Post by fuzzywuzzy » Fri Dec 28, 2007 9:41 am

Took my nieces, Mom & sis in-law yesterday to see The Water Horse.

Absolutely loved it. If you love animal friendship stories and beautiful photography, go see this film. Its a great family film.

Takes place in Scotland during WW2, but, was filmed in New Zealand.

Has anyone seen Atonement yet?

Set during the war, you say?

Does the Water Horse outdo Mr. Limpet? :)

I have tried not to spoil but it's possible......

I saw it today. It is very well made, muchly dark but not quite Notes on a Scandal dark. The soundtrack is amazing, wwith a typewriter used as a percussion instrument, and there is a five-minute longshot in the middle that is amazing, with no CGI except some smoke.

The story is well-told, with some interesting time shifts. Not too hard to follow. Nice work with symbolism, like a mostly black-and-white war hospital and then two instances of bold red are introduced, for guilt. Stuff like that.

Keira Knightley is acceptable but all the other primary actors are very good, including the two young people who play Briony at different ages.

There is war violence, some language, and some sex scenes. The language is one sequence with a soldier who does the British overuse of the F word, and it's a funny sequence. There is another naughty word but it is typed rather than spoken. But you see it several times. The sex is only one intense scene, and you don't see any specifics but it's pretty hot. There are some references I'd think younger teenagers should be spared. I would cut off this one at age 15 or so.

Mrs S and the Spocklets went to WaterHorse. They liked it-wife wants to go to Scotland because of the scenery(Plus I think she wants some authentic Haggis.) I will have to tell her we are agoing to NZ instead.

I went to Charlie Wilson's War.

Kind of Freaky-I am almost positive that I remember the actual Dan Rather story that was shown in the hot tub scene.

Spock...I think Scotland is probably nice too!
Charlie Wilson's War is on my must see list.

This movie apparently hasn't come to my area yet, so I didn't know much about it. I just went to find the trailer on IMDB.

I intend to see it just as soon as possible.

I am going to try to convince Emma that she wants to see it tomorrow while Maddie is off with her Mock Trial team.

It's sad that a well made film like Water Horse will tank at the box office while the Chipmunks are over $150 million and counting. I saw both of them and thought the Chipmunks was fairly bland with little to appeal to adults other than nostalgia for the originals. I also wonder why they brought in name celebrities to voice the Chipmunks (Justin Long, the Mac guy in the TV commercials is Alvin), when they speed up their voices just like the old tv show so you have no idea who it is who actually is doing the voice.

Atonement is good but overrated; it shouldn't be getting yearend top film consideration.

Very good question.

And, as an aside, I presume everyone would recognize a picture of the Mac guy, but could anyone name him without reading the above?

How about his friend, PC? :)

PSM, glad that you are going to see it! Tell us what Emma thinks after the show. My 10 year old niece loved it!

I could because I watched the TV show "Ed," in which Justin Long was a featured character fairly often. I show an episode of it every semester to start things off, and he's got a largish part in that one.

I think they picked PC guy because he has a resemblance to Bill Gates.

I loved the show "Ed" and wish that it was still on.

I've seen him many times on "The Daily Show" as a "correspondent". Would have to Phone A Friend to tell you his name...
