Not a good day for dogs (another request)

#1 Post by gsabc » Wed Dec 26, 2007 10:35 pm

Came here to post, and saw the note about Annie, who will be added to my prayer list. I've got my own request, too. Our black lab Midnight is in surgery tonight as well, possibly with "bloat", where the stomach has turned around and constricted, possibly with something else.

When we came home tonight, she was lethargic and wouldn't eat her dinner. Then she went outside and stayed out a long time, unusual with all the snow still on the ground. I went out to see what was happening, and she was gagging, trying and failing to bring something up.

The gagging went on even after coming in, and I got afraid she would aspirate the saliva and gastric juices that were coming up. She threw up in the car for real on the way, and seemed to feel a bit better. The x-rays showed some other things, though, and so now she's in surgery. We don't know what else they might find.

She is 13-1/2, arthritic in both back knees, neuropathic in the back end, but still happy, wanting to chase the evil squirrels and managing a good tail wag when we went in to see her before the surgery. If you still have some room on your lists, please add one more. Thanks.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

You've got them from here. There's always room for these requests, but the list is really full today.

Let us know how she's doing. Kay

Midnight, I will think of you tonight with hugs and love. Please get better. Get all the way better! The world needs good dogs.

Furthermore, I will think good thoughts for your family, because they are scared, too.

We will add Midnight to our prayers.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

News thus far is good. Midnight came through the surgery in good shape, or at least as good as a 13-1/2 year old dog can. There was evidence of the stomach torsion (redness in the right places), but it had apparently cleared itself, probably when she barfed (yes, that's an 'f', not a 'k') in the back seat of my car. They checked in case it had gone 360 degrees, but it was clear. No other blockages, despite all the gas and 'fecal material' they saw in the x-rays. No arrhytmias or regurgitation as she came out of the anesthetic, all to the good.

As of this morning, she is awake and alert, barking at the big bad vacuum cleaner they were using. Still on morphine and some other stuff. They'll try feeding her later today if nothing else happens.

Meanwhile, I am bright-eyed (from the bloodshot orbs) and bushy-tailed (because I didn't bother to comb it). Less than five hours of sleep, broken approximately in half by the post-surgery call. Sure am glad it's a slow week at work.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. Now I need to post mine over in Annie's thread.

We had a black lab named Midnight when I was growing up... probably the best dog we ever had.

I hope your Midnight continues to improve....
