Agreed. I'm not sure there was a dry eye in our row.

I only wish that they had the foresight to set up the question with the kid in the Hot Seat and tape it.

It might have given ABC the chance to edit into a later episode, if circumstances allowed.

And the suggestion of the $50,000 to Make a Wish would have been terrific, too.

It was truly memorable as it was, though.
I still think tney should have just threw out the Heaton appearance and put the kid in the hotseat with the lights and music and play for $50K for make a wish, more people probably would have enjoyed it and it would have been a great advertisement for MAW to show an example of the work they do. Plus the kid might have loved being on TV.

Beebs can make the joke as she (and I) come from a conference that can count as high as twelve. Maybe more, but we've not yet been tested.

So much to say. It is really not worth arguing about the abortion issue because it's not going to change anyone's mind here. However, I will say that I called PH's CHARITY a cult. I do think it has cult-like aspects. If you google her appearance on BAM last night, plenty of sites are calling her "anti-abortion actress PH." She has said things that logically boggle the mind. Anyone who doesn't think that the anti-abortioners who bomb and kill and have little kids that can barely speak holding up signs with doll body parts on them in the name of religion are not cultish, well, I hope you will think again. Of course not every anti-abortioner does this--it is all a question of degree.

The problem with her charity is that it doesn't tell pregnant women about all of their options. Helping pregnant women means telling them about all of their options, including adoption and abortion. PH seems to especially target the young, with college outreach. My main point in all of this is that I am disppointed a celeb was allowed to play for a political charity. I remain so.

As an aside, are celebs allowed to play for religious charities?

You bring up a good question. What are the guidelines given by the show for the charities chosen? I don't know the answer.

With that being said, why would anyone's charity have to adhere to your personal guidelines? You aren't donating money to it. Are you sure that all of the other celebrities' charities would pass your rigid morality test? Please cite some facts about her charity that relegates it to "cult" status. Why would a pregnancy aid group have to disseminate abortion information? So many questions.
Well, then

Their website has a whole section on abortion. Now, basically it says they don't do it and it's bad for you, but it's not like they act like it doesn't exist.

And I think the fact that Heaton is known as an anti-abortion actress - when half if this country is anti-abortion to some degree - reflects the need if some to have total ideological purity about certain issues. Who cares what her politics are?

Interesting blog with some of PH's foundation e-mails strategizing about how to cultishly overcome a woman's reasons for wanting an abortion.

I certainly don't care. And I didn't know about her stance on the issue until it was brought up in this thread.

For people like Eddie who were thinking about being unemployed while the clock was ticking down and debating what to do (or the eight ROF contestants who sat there watching any chance of appearing on the show go up in smoke while Patricia dithered), I'm sure that Patricia's "nightmarish" experience will gain a lot of sympathy. After all, it must be tough being forced to fly first class all the way across the country to stay in some cushy motel and get paid a bunch of money to promote a crappy comedy that's going to be off the air after about three episodes at which time you'll be forced to eke out an existance on the million bucks or so in guarantee money you made when you signed for the comedy.

I'd sure hate to have to endure one Patricia's nightmares.

Please note I meant it was OUR nightmare, not Heaton's, to endure that in person, as opposed to watching the broadcast. (How else could she endure it?) And especially so for the remaining seven RoFers. At one point I even turned to Jeanie and said the worst part was that they made the seven sit through both of the damn celebrity segments... that if it seemed long to us, imagine how they must be feeling?

In fact, Steve, I was also more than a little agitated earlier when they went to commercial right after Rebecca Kesler's $50K question (after having done so following her $25K as well), and the warm-up comedian announced the next segment would be the last with the contestants. I was upset that all the bits with John Carpenter, Rachael Ray, and the Sharks -- not to mention the leisurely pacing and loads of talk with Rebecca (a lot got cut) -- might result in only one FF, which would have truly sucked.

Fortunately for rest of the RoF, Rebecca walked away on the next Q, allowing for a second FF... and then a third. (TPTB were obviously nonplussed when Ellen llamaed the $1K question, causing yet another lengthy delay; clearly they'd figured on her being the holdover. But they couldn't end the "regular" part of the show like that, so Leah got her chance.)

And note also that I said "to be fair to" Heaton, not "to sympathize with", because I didn't sympathize, and still don't. I did not intend to make it sound like I did, or that I felt sorry for her. She put herself in that position, and as noted, was surely well compensated for it. I was merely trying to build on what Frank said, to explain what I saw as additional reasons, not excuses, contributing to the entire disastrous performance.

Unbiased and abortion do not go together. Again, this is why I was disappointed in the allowed charity.

Amanda Marcotte seems an odd choice to support any point of view, particularly considering other threads on this board. In addition to being hired and fired as John Edward's campaign blogger, at various times she has been charged (rather convincingly, IMO) with playing fast and loose with facts on a variety of topics, being anti-religious, and plagiarizing other people's work.

Heaton's charity is not political. Abortion is legal. If her group were trying to change the law, that would be political. But they aren't.

And, since abortion is legal, I don't know what you're complaining about. You should be happy.

I wasn't going to drag this thread any farther, but just for grins I thought I'd actually check out some facts. My main point for this is to reinforce that making shit up isn't always an effective rebuttal to what someone else says. To refute your statement above, please refer to the below:

http://www.wpclinic.org/services/counseling-support/

Support
The WPC is here to support you regardless of what you decide. Should you decide to parent, the center offers a program called Earn While You Learn (EWYL), which offers emotional and material assistance, as well as the opportunity to network with other new mothers and fathers.

Should you choose to terminate your pregnancy, the WPC offers one-on-one counseling, as well as an abortion recovery support group. Please note that WPC does not refer for or perform abortions.

Should you explore adoption, the WPC is available to educate you on your adoption options and to provide resources and access to other birth moms who have made this choice.

Referrals to agencies and attorneys are available upon request.
Well, then
