Last Night's "Duel"

Am I the only person who would have chosen the former football player, if given the chance.

Not because he was a football player or his race, but because he kept all of that weight on his frame after he was done playing. To me, it shows a serious lack of "smarts".

My biggest chuckle came on the reindeer/Hanukkah question. Miss "I'm too good for Mensa" Smarty-Pants doesn't know the theme song to Rudolph, plus then says that there are 12 days in Hanukkah to the host, Mike GREENBERG.

Not sure why there's all the spoilers, since the show was last night (what is the accepted etiquette for how long after airing something should be spoilered?). So I didn't quote anything.

I saw parts of the first hour of this, mainly because my tv was still on that channel from Judge Judy earlier and I hadn't changed it to watch anything else.

I haven't even heard about this, so I just kind of picked up the rules (as they were) as they went along.

In regards to either being Christian, Jewish or atheist, there are other choices. Stereotyping or not, with her being Asian (my perception) and her last name, it's quite possible that she's Buddhist, Jainist or any number of Eastern religions. Or she's a hard line bible thumper that doesn't believe in secular Christmas songs because they aren't the 'reason for the season'.

I didn't see this part, so I didn't know about the Jewish husband but, in my experience, many Jews who marry outside their religion don't really observe anymore and might just have a menorah because "it's Chanukkah" without anything else to go with it. Besides, Chanukkah isn't a major holiday anyway.

I almost didn't make it through that first chick. Was she being a dumbass, annoying little actress on purpose?

What else did he say about his college education experience? I only saw him say that he had been offered two college athletic scholarships, which means diddly-squat to me.

After all, I was offered scholarships in two sports, so that devalues the general notion of athletic scholarships, without knowing the schools.

Did he say where he played collge football? If it was an Ivy League school or Nebraska, then yuo know that he must be smart.

This has annoyed me from the start. He does it alot and it is distracting.

That and the number of commercials. Sorry, but the 'and we will see the answer right after the commerical' pratcically for each question.

It is almost 'must record' TV so that I can skip them all and see the 1 1/2 hour show in 30 minutes.

It seems with BAM it was after it aired Pacific and just don't put anything spoilerish in the subject, that way if it was four days later and you still hadn't watched your tape it was your own problem if you chose to click on that thread. I suppose it was different when the syndicated version started, since times could be different all over the place but, for prime time shows, there must be some 'all clear' date. Maybe.

If anybody leaks the ending of The Sixth Sense, there's going to be an empty cot in the old bunkhouse tonight!

They would have loved a menorah we had. Wrought iron, with eight spikes radiating out and up from a central, higher spike. Removable flat stones went on each spike to "hold" the candles (you had to melt the base of the candle to get it to stay in place). Remove the stones, and the thing looked all the world like some medieval torture instrument.

Ha, that reminds me of a menorah I found in a junk shop in Central City years ago (they only became 'ye olde antique shoppes' once casino gambling was legalized in the old mining towns and they started getting the carriage trade up there).

The staves were old Jewish guys wearing tzitzis with their hands up in the air (which was where the candles went). The legend on the bottom read "Holed Up in Jerusalem". Ha!

I mentioned that years later to my psychologist and he had one just like it!

That's why I said we don't really have any rules about this. And I guess, after one or two spoiler boxes, anyone reading the thread would know that a thread is spoilerish, so that it should be avoided if that matters. Same with if the subject line is labelled as a spoiler (since we can't view individual posts by accident, as we could on the old Bored). And all the transcript threads are spoilers, by definition.

So, if it's a nuisance, don't bother with the spoilers. Unless you're putting a surprise one in the middle of an unrelated post.

I checked the tape and what sounded like two Fulbright scholarships last night sounded more like two full ride scholarships on a second listening. Either way why did the telemarketer add anything about college in his introduction? The players seem to be able to say what they want so why not just stick with telemarketer and high school football?

It didn't matter as Mrs. Mensa was going to choose the lone woman lunch lady anyway.

Tuesday night's fast national ratings don't look any better for "Duel". It's keeping up with "Choirs" in the 18-49 demo, but not in total households.
The CBS rerun of "NCIS" did best for 8-9, even in the "young" demo.

By stretching out all that pseudo-suspense, they're conserving their prize budget and making the beancounters happy, but they're killing the actual excitement of the show. Do they ever screen those stunts past a test audience?

They should cut the value of the chips, if that's what it takes to squeeze more duels into an hour and keep things moving.

Some random thoughts:

1) I like the show, but even with the DVR sometimes it is tough to watch because just when a person in the room (like ME) thinks it is safe to talk w/o interrupting , or when you fast forward, you end up missing something.

2) Mike the host seemed to be at a loss for words at times when conversing with the contestants.

3) Mike: "You took a lot of time there, Monica, before you pressed her. What were you thinking?"

Monica: "I was thinking about how many of the last five Presidents were Governors before taking the highest office. That's what I was thinking about.(giggle) ...YOU asked!"

Mike: "I guess that's my own fault. But, why press?"

Monica: "Um, just like I said, a little voice in my head told me to do it, and I did it"

4) Monica seemed to have quite a relationship with her chips. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

6) Q- "How far away can a mosquito detect your presence?"

DH said, "Well that is an odd question. Seems that there might be a loophole." I didn't understand what he meant at first, but he explained that if the mosquito could detect you at 100 feet, then it could also detect you at the lesser amounts. (For the record DH also disagreed with the Armed Forces question on Monday night because of the Marines/Coast Guard aspect)

Best example of that was when he referred to the Rocker as being somebody from the Ramones (?) and the Rocker replied about there not being a work release program from the cemetery.

Regarding the mosquito question, that's just nit-picking. One can assume that when they ask "how far" they're asking for the maximum range.

But why would anyone know the answer to that WWOQ?
