Peter Jackson to produce "The Hobbit"

#1 Post by earendel » Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:53 pm

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinemas have evidently worked out their differences sufficiently for New Line to bring Jackson back as the executive producer of "The Hobbit". According to the report, there will be two films, the first to be released in 2010 and the sequel(???) in 2011.

OK, how is there going to be a sequel? Are they going to take Bilbo only so far - maybe to Beorn's cabin, then put the journey through Mirkwood and the arrival at the Lonely Mountain in the sequel? Seems rather silly to me, but anything's possible, I suppose.

I'm glad he's making this film, but that sequel business is worrisome.

I imagine the sequel will begin with Bilbo meeting Jar Jar Binks.
I am about 25% sure of this.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

If it was any other director, I'd be afraid of something like this happening, but after the quality job that Jackson did with LOTR, surely it would take all the evil power of the One Ring, itself, to force him into such a travesty!

I don't know....Jackson put PLENTY of things of his own imagining into LoTR.

I would think TABA would be a much more filmable story and with two movies it should be possible to include a lot of detail from the story without heavy editing and making parts up to make it all fit together.

But that doesn't mean they won't screw it all up to make it more "commercial".

This is going to be very difficult on the make-up department if they cast Ian Holm in the title role.

There is certainly enough material for two films, but why not make only one?

At any rate, I'm looking forward to it.

It was only a matter of time before this came together. I am looking forward to it as well. I only have the animated version of The Hobbit and need the Real Thing in my collection.

Besides Bilbo, Gandalf and Gollum are there any other characters from LoTR that we would see in this film?

Off the top of my head, Gwaihir.

Also I think Balin was in the LOTR movies in flashback, when they related the tale of what happened in Moria.

And probably some of the elves will have been at the battle of five armies.

The most notable would be Elrond Half-elven. Although there is not much mention of Rivendell in The Hobbit, and what is mentioned pales in comparison with the descriptions in LOTR (Elves were seen as singing nonsense songs, for instance), Elrond does play a role - in fact
Spoiler
his asking to see Thorin's map is what gives Bilbo and the dwarves the opportunity to see the moon runes giving them the way to enter the secret side entrance to Smaug's lair:

Stand by the gray stone when the thrush knocks
Additionally Legolas' father, Thranduil, is the Elven-king of Mirkwood, and Gimli's father, Gloin, is one of the 13 dwarvish companions. I suppose it would be possible for Bloom and Rhys-Davies to fill those roles, but I doubt it.

Gwaihir is not mentioned by name in the movies.

Peter Jackson is a true fan of the books, so I am sure that the movies will be great and he won't leave any important character out.

Tom Bombadil wasn't in The Hobbit, was he?

No, he wasn't. There was a troll named Tom, however.

Sam Raimi is going to direct both films. Like LOTR, they will both be filmed at the same time. Peter Jackson has too many directing commitments already, so he'll just have the title of Executive Producer and will not have much involvement otherwise.

Why?

They already made Holm up as a younger Bilbo in "The Fellowship of the Ring".

Besides- recall that the Ring preserved Bilbo- so that at 111, he looked much the same as he did when he was 50.

Won't be a problem at all.
