I agree, and couldn't believe the player went for that one. There were a few questions where answer D was similar to 'BAM's joke $100 answer.
One addendum: if all the "shootout" questions are similar to last night's, I think the writers have found a use for all those WGAS questions that were rejected for regular game play.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

ABC now has two shows we can watch together as a family, Pushing Daisies and Duel.

I'll add that I, too, really like the game itself but please, please, please speed it up.

Not only the dramatic pauses but having the contestants introduce themselves over and over and over.

I would really like to play this game. The use of the chips, the "force an answer" button, even the "pick your opponent", all of that makes it a good game.

The questions are not too tough but, as in Millionaire, the "miss and you are out" aspect really increases the tension.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I kinda liked it, but I was bored to tears with the slow pace.

And I'm not a fan of Mike Greenberg (actually, I'm not a fan of either Mike in Mike & Mike), so that's probably turning me off as well.

But I'll check it out some more tonight.

The "pick your opponent" is a big thing- once again, a smart player will have to somehow mask how smart he/she is, or else the odds of getting picked are slim.

And, in order to get ont he leaderboard, I'm guessing you have to get in early, so you can win enough duels to get into the final on Sunday.

How did they pick the first two duelists? I tuned in late and didn't see. Random draw?

Same here. Looks like the audition puts a lot of weight on fitting stereotypical images and reciting those entertaining but meaningless introductions, though. "I'm a lawyer and I still have trouble telling my left from my right." Sheesh!

TPTB just introduced the first duelist--"ABC_Sue"--without explaining how she was chosen. She chose her first competitor out of three random possibilities, as they do from here on out.

Unfortunately "ABC_Sue"'s big selection moment was left on the (virtual) cutting room floor. She was picked by the computer in the same way the three opponents were. Mike Greenberg even did an entire introduction spiel leading to her selection.

Holy Moxie Crimefighter*, Marley - I was thinking "Is that your...IDENTITY!" about the software engineer throughout the taping. The guy looks intimidating enough, and then he tells his potential opponent his kids are Maximillian and Leonardo.

What Veterans Day Games are you talking about? I've never heard of such a thing.

I didn't say the question was right or wrong, just that it had the potential to be controversial. Federal Law states that the Coast Guard can revert to the Department of Defense during wartime, but that's not their current status.
Spoiler
Sorry. I meant the Panther games every November where they do a Veterans Day salute at pregame and halftime.

I agree about the timing on the Coast Guard. If the question says currently or presently, it is stickier. I forgot about the reassignment of a military arm into a civilian department. That was weird anyway.
Spoiler
I too disliked the question. The Coast Guard is one of the five armed uniform services but has never been a full time part of the DoD.

What is now the Coast Guard started as several different entities that belonged variously to the Treasury, Commerce and Justice Departments but never to Defense (Or War Department as it was known then). When it was officially formed as the Coast Guard we more or less know today in 1915 it was part of the Department of Treasury, being assigned to the Navy Department only during WWI and WWII. In the 60's it became part of the new Transportation Department and finally now is part of Homeland Security.

If one defines "military" as being part of Department of Defense it seems like shaky ground to include the Coast Guard. If you define an "armed" uniform service as military than I guess it is. At least in what we saw aired it was not questioned although I am glad that at least it was asked after the fact. I would have had to cover both answers because that issued concerned me right away.

As for the show I thought it decent and Tivo as always helps with the terribly slow pace of play. A moderately decent player could really kick butt in this game because the rules give you a way around that occasional stumper. I haven't kept up with my entertainment/pop culture trivia in a long time (knew nothing about Tony Soprano's children for example) but everything else seemed pretty straight forward.

Some of the ones people didn't know and missed or had to use 4 coins for were kinda sad. I thought the time of light from the sun was a good example of that but science always seems tough to the "good TV" participants usually cast for these things.

Although it did look like a few MAWGs in the group. Of course nobody would pick them! I wouldn't have either.

And the random selector of the next contestant sure didn't seem very random did it?

I thought it was dull. Sorta tuned out after first hour.
That said, it *could* work if they picked up the pace a LOT!

Is it true they were making up/re-writing rules on the fly?

At the top of the page, look for Profile. Near the bottom of that page, you can select a picture to import.

Oh, pshaw! I bet the hick used car salesman gave his kids names like that, too!* :P

*And, given how the secret identity stuff has been built into the game, I'm waiting for him to reveal that being a used car salesman is a part-time job, and that he's a nuclear scientist at Oak Ridge Laboratories for his day job.

I thought that was a really stupid thing to do. He should have said that their names were Max and Leo.

psm says : "ABC now has two shows we can watch together as a family, Pushing Daisies and Duel."

I love duel so please keep watching maybe it will become a "Series" and not just an event, even if they kill it off in 2 1/2 years, it would be worth the ride especially if some of us can get on it! At least it's half way intelligent, unlike DOND and 5th grader and American Idol.

And if only they could turn that online game into an actual qualification match for the show...

I played the online version and lost to Neville (first champ on Crosswords) on the 17th question. I play there as WhoisMark and have won a whopping 3 duels.

You can randomly set up a match or go to the leaderboard and challenge someone who is available.

OMG! You're right! That totally didn't register before. That's even cooler than the "7th Heaven" twins, Sam and Dave. Now I'm rooting for him.

I was going to try that last night but I'm having problems with my monitor at home; sometimes the picture is blanking out after I power up. Recycling the power displays the picture for a couple seconds, then it goes out again. I'm not sure if the problem is in the monitor or my graphics card. <sigh>

Anyway, that online game has potential, if TPTB would just give up a little of their casting power.

On theovernight ratings report, Duel edged out Clash of the Choirs, but both were viewed less than reruns on CBS and FOX.

Beat out by reruns. Ugh!

But you see, that's why ABC needs a publicity gimmick, such as "Come take the challenge at the Duel web site, and you can find yourself a contestant on the show!"

I would challenge him.

By naming his kids Maximillian and Leonardo, he seems like a pseudo-intellectual, in my initial impression

But you'd be another serious game show MAWG who would be shunned by all the other contestants, in the first place!
