QOD Tuesday 12-18 "HELLO, DOLLY!"

#1 Post by fantine33 » Tue Dec 18, 2007 7:42 am

12/18 HELLO, DOLLY!

I debated on whether or not there's a comma in there and decided yes. Pretty self explanatory, so let's not chance fudging up something with a groovy opening, okay?

1. Dolly the Sheep was cloned at Roslin Institute in what city?

2. Dolly Parton refused to let this singer record I Will Always Love You when she was informed that they required a co-writing credit and part of the royalties. (It went on to become the biggest selling song ever by a female vocalist.)

3. True or false? The Dolly Madison Bakery was named for Dolley Madison.

4. The Dolly Sisters were a popular dance act in the Teens and Twenties. I don’t think they there are much remembered now, but back in the day (1945) they rated a “biographical” movie starring June Haver and what other actress in the lead roles?

5. What is Barbie’s full name (FM&L)?

QOD: Hello, Dolly! was directed by this actor/singer/dancer who got savaged by the critics (the movie actually lost money despite being a huge box office success), but he was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe.

5 Point Bonus: The next year he went in a completely different direction with this movie starring Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart as old saddle pals.

5 Point Bonus Bonus: This actress was never considered for the lead role because producers felt she wasn’t attractive enough, despite being the originator of the role and winning a Tony for her performance.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. Dolly the Sheep was cloned at Roslin Institute in what city?
Edinbrough

2. Dolly Parton refused to let this singer record I Will Always Love You when she was informed that they required a co-writing credit and part of the royalties. (It went on to become the biggest selling song ever by a female vocalist.) Barbra Streistand?

3. True or false? The Dolly Madison Bakery was named for Dolley Madison. False - just because

4. The Dolly Sisters were a popular dance act in the Teens and Twenties. I don’t think they there are much remembered now, but back in the day (1945) they rated a “biographical” movie starring June Haver and what other actress in the lead roles? Jane Russell?

5. What is Barbie’s full name (FM&L)? Barbara Millicent Roberts (OMG!!! I am ooooold)

QOD: Hello, Dolly! was directed by this actor/singer/dancer who got savaged by the critics (the movie actually lost money despite being a huge box office success), but he was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe. Gotta be Gene Kelly

5 Point Bonus: The next year he went in a completely different direction with this movie starring Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart as old saddle pals. The Cheyenne Social Club - with Shirley Jones, for good measure

5 Point Bonus Bonus: This actress was never considered for the lead role because producers felt she wasn’t attractive enough, despite being the originator of the role and winning a Tony for her performance. Ethel Merman?

Spoiler

1. Somewhere in Scotland. Edinburgh? Hope it's not Glasgow.
2. I'll go with the obvious answer of Whitney Houston.
3. The 50/50/90 rule lurks. I'll go False.
4. No clue. My stock answer for movie questions I don't know is "Fielding Melish," but I don't think Woody fits. So...Loretta Young?
5. Barbara Millicent Roberts

QOD: Gene Kelly

Bonus: Crap, I should know this. "Fielding and the Melishes"

Bonus Bonus: Carol Channing

Spoiler

I'm not too flustered about missing the June Haver question (since I've never seen it), but I'm so pissed at myself for missing "The Cheyenne Social Club".
