We're back!

#1 Post by hermillion » Mon Dec 17, 2007 10:04 am

At school, that is. My internet access at home is gone for the time being, but I'm thrilled to be able to comunicate from here. Most of the city has power now, although there are still several areas with older structures/enormous trees that are needing house-to-house visits from the power companies. All but 7 schools in the district are functioning today. Kids were told to dress in layers, in case the heat at their particular building was not up to comfort levels. We still have a lot of traffic signals out, making road travel an adventure. The snow proved to be a light one -- build-up on grass and parked cars, but melted quickly on road surfaces.

Anyway, thanks for the prayers and good thoughts. It will take quite a while to clear away the debris, and there are MANY homes needing roof and window repair before families can return. The auto body shops are booked solid, and anybody with a chain saw and a willing back can expect full employment for several weeks. All of my students are dying to tell their stories, so today's assignment will be to write "Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?" and we'll compile the work into a book for the classroom.

:P :P :P :P :P

Cool! :)

Also cool to think how much the kids must appreciate being back in school today.

Hurray! I'm glad you're back.

I've been keeping tabs on the Public Service outages in your part of the state as well as the OG&E outages over here. After a week, there are still 67,000 people* without power in the OKC metro area.

Stay warm!

*I should have said "households." The number of people is probably two or three times that.

Will the kids in your district have extra school days added in June to make up for the ice days lost last week?

What a great outlet for their personal stories.

Glad you are back!

Hmm, maybe I should show Princess Peanut these posts.

For at least a year, she has professed this great desire to visit Okalhoma. We are not entirely sure why.

Well, sure, it is fun state name to say.

I think that it is tied to the fact that my wife and I attended a wedding in Tulsa a coupe years ago without the kids. I am afraid that it became an exotic place in her imagination.

Anyway, I imagine that we will visit Oklahoma some year.

But, I imagine that we will try to avoid ice season and tornado season. (Do we have a window of a few weeks?)
