5th Grader and Power of 10 may be syndicated

The resurgence of game shows on network television has now spread to syndication.

With “Deal or No Deal” set to go this fall, studios are contemplating syndicating other prime-time hits including “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” and “Power of 10” for debut on stations in 2009.
If 5th Grader goes to syndication, I wonder if they'll still be restricting themselves to the idiotic deer-in-the-headlight players or if the rest of us might stand a chance at being casted?

And there's one more.
Executives said neither of the current season’s new syndicated game shows brought to market the pre-branding needed to make a program a hit.

That won’t be the case in 2008. “Deal” will join Debmar-Mercury’s pre-branded “Trivial Pursuit: America Plays” as new series from the genre on station lineups. The show will have strong financial and marketing support from Hasbro, maker of the “Trivial Pursuit” board game. Mark L. Walberg is on deck to host.

Why would they extend their search beyond the deers-in-the-headlight?

Because there must be a limited supply of those, I'm hoping.

No, I think PSM's question was "Why syndicate 5th Grader?" And I would agree. I hadn't heard about "Trivial Pursuit" being a game show at all, much less syndicated, but it could work.

Well, there were many ways to interpret her one-word question in response to my entire post. :P

As the article says, they're looking to syndicate game shows because they're relatively cheap. Whether 5th Grader would make the cut depends a lot on whether Jeff Foxworthy agreed to host it, since that show is more of a platform for his brand of humor than it is a traditional quiz show. If they can pack an entire season's taping into a couple of months, he probably could accomodate it into his schedule. (Drew Carey could not do so for Power of 10, given his commitment to TPIR.)

That's for sure - given the contestants they choose, they should be able to have a small prize budget.

I should say, why syndicate 5th Grader, isn't there enough bad tv already? Next thing you know, they will syndicate "Kid Nation."

I believe that AYSTA5G has a very limited life-span and by syndicating the show, they are "diluting the magic."

Since Moonie and mrkelley mentioned that their kids would be interested in being on Kid Nation, I'd really enjoy hearing the kids' comments about the show. We adults have certainly poked enough fun at it. :P

However, I think those long reality shows like KN or Survivor take too much production effort for syndication.

I was mocking the shows, not Marley.

I appreciate the sacrifice that Marley has made for us all, diligently watching these truly horrible shows, week after week, just so he can tell us what happened.

You're welcome!

Pea seems not to have noticed that I watched KN in one part to shallowly appreciate TKNPTB's craft in manipulating the game and the editing, and one part ranting against TKNPTB for doing so and rooting for a revolution that would have broken that power and given the kids some of the independence the hype claimed they were going to have.

There is an interesting article in the LA Times today. The article mentions that the Writer's Guild is trying to unionize the writers of reality shows, but it's not happening.

The author of the aritcle tried to reach Mark Burnett and the other reality show big-wigs for comment, but nobody would talk to them.

No surprise there.

I'm sure Mark's reply would be, "There's no writing on this show! It's all 'real'."

So, I'm guessing that Wife Swap would be considered Reality TV too? I saw an ad for it last night, with all new episodes slated to appear after the new year.

As far as Kid Nation goes: My kiddo thought it was a strange show, but along with Mr K and Moon's kids, also wanted to be on it. LOL at Marley's wish for a revolt! I would love to see that too.

Alrighty! :)

Your daughter didn't think it would be one long stretch of tedious chores and boredom? Or is she interested in winning one of the gold stars?

Would she Burn The Book?
