Lyrically Speaking 12-13-07 - Scoring & Such
LS #9……………………………………..1980
They tell me that the kids today love the 80’s, and because I was not up to trudging though some sorry-ass late 90’s stuff, we’re going to stay with the 80’s today.
Anyway, why not start it all where it began, at the beginning, at the start of it all, it’s 1980.
Good Luck & Have Fun!
1. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
2. "Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"
3. The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing
4. From the park I hear rhythms
Marleys hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block
5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissing them
I never knew how badly I was missing them
We both know we're never gonna make it
But when we touch we never have to fake it
6. They do it down on camber sands
They do it at Waikiki
Lazing about the beach all day,
At night the crickets creepy
7. I got the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today, you`ll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say
8. Since then I've been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don't believe it
He was just leaving
9. Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination
10. Now if I tell you that you suffer from delusions
You pay your analyst to reach the same conclusions
Bonus. You must explain
Why this must be
Did you lie
When you spoke to me

Thank God for the 80's--I was up half the night with a migraine and couldn't face the 90's today. Even so, I have my usual assortment of half-answers....

1. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
Call Me, Blondie
2. "Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"
The Wall. Or, Another Brick in the Wall, Pink Floyd. My high-school boyfriend had the Dark Side of the Moon logo painted on his car and hunted down this obscure soundtrack to an obscure movie (Zabriskie Point) to get every piece of music ever put out by them, so you know I saw the movie, too...
3. The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing
Some Steely Dan song. Mellow-sounding. Probably Hey Nineteen.
4. From the park I hear rhythms
Marleys hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block
This I don't know. Alas.
5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissing them
I never knew how badly I was missing them
We both know we're never gonna make it
But when we touch we never have to fake it
Leah. But I can't think of the guy's name! Love the song.
6. They do it down on camber sands
They do it at Waikiki
Lazing about the beach all day,
At night the crickets creepy
Pulling Mussels From a Shell, Squeeze
7. I got the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today, you`ll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say
Let My Love Open the Door, Pete Townshend. My sister and The Who were like my previously-mentioned boyfried and Pink Floyd...
8. Since then I've been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don't believe it
He was just leaving
No Reply, Genesis
9. Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination
Brass in Pocket, The Pretenders. Saw them in concert a few years back and Chrissie is still great, even if I don't really like this song...
10. Now if I tell you that you suffer from delusions
You pay your analyst to reach the same conclusions
I LOVE THIS SONG!!! My all-time favorite Police tune. Zenyatta Mondatta is the only vinyl LP I still have, but don't have a turntable to see what shape it's in. Canary in a Coal Mine.
Bonus. You must explain
Why this must be
Did you lie
When you spoke to me
Like Solsbury Hill, this is one of those songs I knew but never knew the name until this bored.
Drum roll...Train in Vain, The Clash
So. You've managed to do 1979 and 1980 without I'm the Man. What's up with that?![]()

Sorry I'm so late this morning with the stickies, but I'm battling computer problems that popped up just after midnight. I was lucky to get enough uptime last night to do the rankings. There's been no uptime this morning, so I'm posting from my usual discreet location.....

Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don't believe it
He was just leaving
Misunderstanding ... Genesis
9. Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination
Brass in Pocket ... Pretenders
10. Now if I tell you that you suffer from delusions
You pay your analyst to reach the same conclusions
Don't know this one. Pulling out the 45 for ... Destroyer...The Kinks
Bonus. You must explain
Why this must be
Did you lie
When you spoke to me
Train in Vain ... The Clash. Well chosen.

Re: Lyrically Speaking 12-13-07
Don't know if I'm too late or not, I suddenly thought "I don't think I answered yesterday....
1. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
Call Me - Blondie
2. "Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"
Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
4. From the park I hear rhythms
Marleys hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block
All Night Long - Lionel Ritchie
9. Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination
Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders

LS #9……………………………………..1980
Good Luck & Have Fun!
1. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
#1 Call Me – Blondie
I saw Blondie on July 8th 1979 at the Belmont Racetrack, Rockpile opened for them. Way back in 1978 I was definitely the only kid wearing a “Blondie is a Group” t-shirt.
2. "Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"
#1 Another Brick in the Wall (Part II) – Pink Floyd
Still being sung by schoolkids everywhere, except in South Africa where it was banned.
3. The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing
Say it again
#10 Hey Nineteen – Steely Dan
Unfortunately this song really hits home now.
4. From the park I hear rhythms
Marleys hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block
#5 Master Blaster (Jammin’) – Stevie Wonder
Oops, wrong Marley!
5. I see your lips and I wonder who's been kissing them
I never knew how badly I was missing them
We both know we're never gonna make it
But when we touch we never have to fake it
#29 Ah! Leah! – Donnie Iris
Still being played occasionally on the radio, in my humble opinion, one of the great songs of the 80’s
6. They do it down on camber sands
They do it at Waikiki
Lazing about the beach all day,
At night the crickets creepy
DNC Pulling Mussels (From the Shell) - Squeeze
Who doesn’t like Squeeze? It was very tricky getting the correct lyrics to this one, I changed with lines I was going to go with a few times. Surpisingly never charted in America, could have fooled me as it was played on the radio constantly.
7. I got the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today, you`ll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say
#9 Let My Love Open the Door – Pete Townshend
If I’m not mistaken, I got this song dedicated to my wife on WNEW-FM on Valentine’s Day a long time ago…she was not impressed.
8. Since then I've been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don't believe it
He was just leaving
#14 Misunderstanding – Genesis
A song that hit a little bit too close to home back there in the early 80’s, stinkin’ girlfriends, who need ‘em?
9. Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination
#14 Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders
This song is kind of dirty, and I like that.
10. Now if I tell you that you suffer from delusions
You pay your analyst to reach the same conclusions
DNC Canary in a Coalmine – The Police
Another song that didn’t chart, I’m not even sure that it was released as a single, but they played it on the radio, over and over.
Bonus You must explain
Why this must be
Did you lie
When you spoke to me
#23 Train in Vain – The Clash
I should deduct points for anyone who didn’t get this correct. Please go out and buy London Calling, it’s one of the greatest albums of all-time, and pretty much the best one in the last 30 years. Only made it to #23? Very sad.

It is interesting seeing what was popular in other areas that was ignored around here. Pretty much every song in these last few LS's that you say is "played almost every day" is not to be heard at all around here. I had never heard Big Audio Dynamite until my 80's station came and went around the same time Booch was using that MM.... and they haven't been heard from since (Other than when I see them on VH1 Classic).
On the flip side, Dave Edmunds' Slipping Away was pretty popular around here at the time. I remember it was ranked pretty high on the station I listened to's 1983 year end countdown. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to survive the times and until I saw the video again a few years ago, I hadn't heard it about 20 years....
It frustrates me when I try to find lyrics for a song for one of my LS games, only to find out nobody has them because that song was apparently only a local hit....
