[At this point he was talking so fast that the transcriptionist couldn't keep up.] David mentioned something about "the Montagues and the Capulets slaughtering each other with cardboard swords" and he likened the lights in the studio to the "mother ship coming down and I thought I was going to be probed."

As soon as David says "South Carolina" Greg says "It's South Carolina." The call concludes with David saying, "Let's party at your house!"

When I hear "barrier island" I immediately think of NC or SC. Fortunately NC wasn't a distractor.

Having been raised in Oklahoma I learned a lot about Native American tribal distributions - Cherokee in the SE (later the SW), Apache in the SW, Iroquois in the NE, leaving only "B" as the logical answer.

I would have crashed and burned right here. I knew that the word came from a Persian fairy tale, but thought it referred to a city in India. I'd have made "A" my final answer without hesitation.

I've gotta read the questions better. Missed the "barrier island" part in my first pass here. A Carolina was my first thought, same as ear.

PAF likely for me, assuming I haven't used it on the previous Q. Leaning the right way, but with far too much uncertainty.

And thank you, Arthur C. Clarke, who has lived there for years and has used the island as a setting for several of his SF novels. I believe it's even in the title of one - "The Way to Serendip", or something like that. A two-second answer for me.

Didn't even consider the "agua" thing. Would not have seen this one, but had the right answer from something in the root word. Got it on the "free guess" if I had no lifelines left, but probably would have done a 50/50 if available for a gut check.

Indeed. A pumped-up contestant can be a conscientious transcriptor's worst nightmare.

So, I was leaning towards South Carolina, although Florida might have given me pause at $16K. And since I've heard of The View from Serendip, I wouldn't have run into trouble with the STQ question.


And since David went home with $25K, he's not a carryover.

I guess that I will beat Confessor (among others) and note that Sioux technically is not a tribe. It is a nation -- the Great Sioux Nation. There were three tribes to the Sioux: Dakota; Nakota; and Lakota.

Seven bands to the Lakota tribe.

Crazy Horse belonged to the Oglala band, Lakota tribe, Sioux nation.

Those specifics probably would have been used if the question was given in the upper top tier.

BTW, Sitting Bull was Hunkpapa band, currently Standing Rock Sioux reservation.

Honduras is literally "depths" in Spanish.

Panama is from an local Indian word which has several possible meanings: a type of tree, butterflies, abundance of fish, or "very far".

Guatemala is another indigenous word with an uncertain meaning. It may have to do with trees or volcanoes.

Nicaragua has disputed origins but it was first used for Lake Nicaragua probably from a local tribe or chief named Nicarao combined with the Spanish "agua" for the large lake.

Trying to do "folk etymology" on Spanish names in the Americas can be tricky because of the mixture of Spanish and Indian cultures.
