M-W's word of the year

#1 Post by earendel » Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:10 am

Mirriam-Webster ran an online poll to select the "word of the year". Last year's winner was "truthiness". This year the winner was...

w00t. It's a word that is used in MMORPGs to refer to an achievement, usually after defeating a major monster or finding a significant treasure.

I don't think that was a great choice.

Well, an online poll is more likely to attract people who spend time online, and who more than MMORPGers? Not to say that it's a good choice, but it's not a surprising one. The runners-up included "facebook" (as a verb), "nuanced", "quixotic" and "blamestorm".

From the Jargon File:
w00t

An interjection similar to “Yay!”, as in: “w00t!!! I just got a raise!” Often used for small victories the speaker dies not expect to be of special interest to anyone else. Some claim this is a bastardization of “root”, the highest level of access to a system (particularly UNIX), originated by script kiddies as a 133tspeak equivalent of “root”, and said as an exclamation upon gaining root access. Others claim it originated in the Everquest multiplayer game as an abbreviation of “wonderful loot”. Still other claim it on originated on IRC as the “Ewok victory cheer”] Adj. w00table has the sense of “cool” or “nifty”. This is one of the few leet-speak coinages to have crossed over into non-ironic use among hackers.

I guess I'm officially old. I'm usually up on this stuff, but I had never heard of this "word" before the announcement. And I don't really care to hear about it again. It looks like bu11sh1t to me.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Our local paper ran the wire service story on this, and they used the movie Pretty Woman as an example, claiming that Julia Roberts was saying "W00t, W00t" when she was cheering at the track (or wherever she was).

How quickly they forget. Arsenio should sue the AP.

Blargh. That's not a word. Okay, it's a word, but not really.

Does anyone actually *say* w00t? I use it in IRC/IM and gaming, but I don't think I've ever actually spoken the word out loud.

Oy. That word is fail.

Heh. Okay, as long as someone's saying it. We (meaning my usual group of internet crazies) tend not to take l33t and chatspeak into spoken English, mostly because we're old and cranky.
