new variation of DoND

Last night DoND changed its format slightly, and will be having a series of "Winner Take All" shows this week. The contestants play as they normally would, but once they are finished, with whatever money they won, they are sequestered while the next contestant plays. At the end of the show the contestants are brought back out on stage with the amounts they won in cases. Each contestant knows what he or she won, but doesn't know what the others did. The one with the highest amount wins all three amounts. So now not only does the contestant have to weigh the odds of winning the $1M, but he or she has to decide when to quit with an offer, hoping that it's a bigger offer than the other contestants' offers on that show.

Does only one player get money, then? I would think this would pretty much guarantee that even fewer players will risk hanging around till the very end, thinking they chose the $1MM case. However, the total of all the winners might top $1MM, so there's that to consider.

Still won't watch it. Let's see, "Chuck" and "Heroes" replaced by two hours of DoND. I'd have had to rip out my eyeballs.

And to add to the reality tv glut.......My trivia teammate who help edit Kid Nation, was just hired to edit Dance Wars. He didn't want to do it, but the studio is near where he lives and they offered him too much money. Better hope the WGA strike is over soon....

Well, elwing is a fan of the show, so I watch it with her. Last night the final contestant did stick around until the end. He knocked out the big dollar amounts and his offers were very low; he knew he wasn't going to win, but at one point he said, "If I can't have it, no one else can, either." He ended up with $1. The winner had $50K, and the other contestant had $20K, so the winner ended up with $70,001.

Well, they're still attracting a good-sized audience. And for those folks who still care about which random case the contestant will open and what offer the Banker will make ("I hope it's a really good one, this time!") this new variation adds another layer of what could pass for excitement. I guess.

Actually, this sounds like a very good thing to me. I've never been a big fan of Deal, but I don't really have anything against it, either, as I do some other shows.

This at least adds another piece of strategy, whereas the old show was all about expected value. My mom's a big fan, so she'll probably hate it (Why are the messing around with MY show?)

I watched some of it last night. Who came up with this idea? They seem to come up with more gimmicks every season.

I had to explain it to my mom-she didn't quite understand what they were doing last night.

I look to see more of DoND if the writers' strike grinds on.

Personally, I'm looking forward to "Duel" next week-the promos look interesting!

First off, the home audience got to see what was in a case before it was opened - just before commercial break Howie would take a case to a special box and open it. He couldn't see the contents, nor could the studio audience, but the home audience could. I'm not sure what that added to the game, but it was another gimmick. The first contestant was a big fan of Broadway musicals and so DoND provided an orchestra and played music. She ended up taking a special deal that included $50K in cash plus $12K in "extras" - the chance to see "Wicked". Not just see it, be in it, in costume, along with the actress who plays Glinda. The contestant also gets Glinda's wand, a limo ride to the theater, etc.

The second contestant didn't get very far before time ran out, but apparently tonight's show will give him the opportunity to win $3 million. Evidently each show this week (and it looks as if there will be one every day) will have different gimmicks.

They are really stretching this out.

Negotiations seem to be stuck with each side telling the other to "Get real!"

Unfortunately, this just sends the producers out to sign up some more "reality" crap.

OK, last night's show was sort of a cross between DoND and TPIR. At the end of each contestant's game he had to spin a big wheel and drop a ball down a chute. The wheel was filled with "Plinko"-like rods so the ball would bounce around until it landed in a pocket. The pockets were marked as either 1/2, 2x or 3x (half of them were 1/2, and only 5 were 3x). Wherever the ball ended up at the end of its rotation, that's what the player won. No choice, just spin the wheel.

It was late when we got home so I only saw one contestant. He was a holdover from the previous evening and at the end he was down to three cases - $10; $750,000 and $1 million. The banker offered him $493,000 but the contestant decided to go one more time. The next case he chose held the million and the offer went down to $296,000. He took that offer, then it was time for the wheel. He ended up with only half of that amount. I thought that was pretty crappy - this guy had played virtually to the end and ended up losing money on a gimmick.
