Hope you and yours were not shopping.

Shit. I am here and fine. I will go see where it is.

SouthPark Mall, 4 miles from here.

I never trusted that deck, and only parked on the top level. If it was going to collapse, I wanted to be on top rather than underneath.

CNN.com says that it was just a small park of the deck. Maybe one car smashed underneath, with one fatality that may be related to collapse.

"One person died shortly after a section of a parking deck collapsed at SouthPark Mall.

The piece of the deck between Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom fell just after noon Thursday. Eric Morrison, spokesman for MEDIC, said one person died, but they do not know if it was from injuries sustained during the collapse.

Three ambulances responded to the scene, as well as the city’s mass casualty unit. Firefighters searched the debris under the fallen portion of the deck but did not find anyone. At least one car was crushed underneath.

The collapse was limited to a small section of the parking deck. The parking deck will be closed for the remainder of the day."

They live closer to a different and larger mall; likely they would shop there instead of this one. Unless there is a Nordstrom need, which I doubt.

I am glad that this didn't happen on a weekend, there would probably have been more people in the parking garage.

Traffic is ugly there even on a weekday; it's slap in the middle of a lot of residences. The TV reports are showing cars backed up for long distances. The police are not letting some folks get there cars at the mall, until they get it all straightened out. There is some question as to whether the death was even caused by the collapse; might've been a heart attack or something unrelated.

Here's the Observer's online story as of now:

CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR.
cwootson@charlotteobserver.com

A witness said a woman trying to enter a parking deck at SouthPark mall today hit a wall at high speed, causing a partial collapse of the deck.

The Charlotte Fire Department reported one person dead, but no details were immediately available.

A portion of the third level of the deck between Nieman Marcus and Nordstrom, facing Sharon Road, collapsed onto the second level.

Rod Hodnett said he was on the deck when he saw a green Hyundai, driven by an older woman, stuck on a curb at the entrance to the third level. The car was at first unable to move, she said, then shot forward across the length of the deck.

"She just went like a rocket," Hodnett said. "She just came off and hit the wall and the entire thing collapsed."

Hodnett, who moved to help the woman get her car off the curb, said the woman clutched her chest before the accident. "I think she maybe mistook the gas for the brake."

He rushed to the Hyundai again after the crash, and saw the woman slumped inside.

Portions of the deck were closed off at 1 p.m., but the mall was still open. At least four firetrucks, several paramedic trucks and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Mobile Command Post was at the scene.

The tribe tribe is fine - that is usually a special trip mall for us - there is another closer to us. I rarely park where the incident occurred.

It looks like the driver collapsed or had some episode - ended up accelerating into the wall on the top floor and hit it hard enough to collapse her part of the deck. She was dead by the time anyone got to her.

There isn't much of a Nordstrom need, but the kids have a few places that are at South Park and not the closer mall - the Dick's Sporting Goods is better there as well as the restaurant options and my cooking stores (Sur la Table and Willaims-Sonoma) are there.

We probably go to the nearby mall 3 times as often.

I also now realize that I have never used the deck that collapsed - while I occasionally see the inside of Nordstrom I've never even entered Nieman-Marcus.

This makes no sense - the deck between Nieman Marcus and Nordstrom fasces Fairview - the deck between Nordstrom and Belk faces Sharon and Fairview.
