Christmas music listening
I've got AccuRadio's AccuHolidays going at work. I just wondered how many others listen voluntarily to mostly Christmas music during the season? For lb and anyone else who works in retail, I added the voluntary part because I've worked at Home Depot during the holiday season, and feel your pain.
Carly Simon's Christmas album from 2003 has her on the cover. As a former college student who bought her album back in the day as much for the cover as the music (you know the album of which I speak), I can say for certain that she still has nice legs.
I will smack Madonna upside the head, if I ever meet up with her, for that Betty Boop version of "Santa Baby". I hit the skip button three notes in. There just ain't another version besides Eartha Kitt's.

I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Re: Christmas music listening
I do, but only because I'm listening for specific songs - some of the covers of classic tunes are abominable.gsabc wrote:I've got AccuRadio's AccuHolidays going at work. If I had a Christmas playlist it would include the following:
Sleigh Ride - the orchestral version
Little Drummer Boy - the one with the ethereal-sounding women singing it
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Andy Williams
Mary, Did You Know? - Kenny Rogers and others
O Holy Night - almost anyone
Do You Hear What I Hear? - there's a new version with an African rhythm
Carol of the Bells - preferably an instrumental, but not required
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day - Nat King Cole
Winter Wonderland - Johnny Mathis
Merry Christmas, Darling - The Carpenters
In fact, just about any seasonal song by Nat King Cole or the Carpenters would be fine with me.
Other songs I like to hear:
Another Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg
Merry Christmas, Santa - The Beach Boys
All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey
I'm sure there are others, too.

They're okay, as long as it's voluntary. But when your favorite radio stations switch over to 24/7 holiday music two weeks before Thanksgiving, I agree with you.littlebeast13 wrote:I will vote for anyone who promises to pass a law banning holiday music stations. They are the evil, evil, EVIL!

I'll be a happy man if I never hear "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer", any version of Adam Sandler's alleged holiday songs (and his alleged singing voice), and "Dominick the Donkey" again.

We've developed a tradition of playing it while decorating the tree. I hope our original turns up; we had to play the copy we burned for BD this year. I like the cover art as well as the music. Thank you again, Cori, wherever you are, and merry Christmas.

Dominick the Donkey is one of the songs played pretty much every night on the store radio, and I've almost developed a strange fondness for it because it's just so cheesy. That and I like to sing it with Dominick's name replaced by one of our manager's names and "donkey" replaced by the more apropos jackass...gsabc wrote:I'll be a happy man if I never hear "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer", any version of Adam Sandler's alleged holiday songs (and his alleged singing voice), and "Dominick the Donkey" again.
I could do without the repeated playing of the damn nauseating Hippopotamus song, the Muppets ^&^&*( version of 12 Days of Christmas, and the monotonous garbage played by the stuff we actually try to sell out in the Christmas room....
Then there was the song that drove me nuts in the 90's because it was played all the time on regular radio stations during December, and that's &*(@#^ Feliz Navidad. Thankfully, the last few seasons have been relatively Feliz Navidad free....

Emma was listening to it when she decorated our tree (Phil Spector's Christmas Album) and I finally had to ask her to turn it off after it played through twice.

But you probably prefer my version....
Lloyd Braun got run over by a reindeer
Walking to his penthouse Christmas Eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But on the Millionaire Bored we believe
He'd been drinking too much champagne
And he tried to kill our show
He did away with the promotions
He botched the network and he had to go
When they found him Christmas morning
He was just a total mess
Clubbed with a bottle of Fukola
And tattooed on his butt "Kiss Uranus"
Lloyd Braun got run over by a reindeer
Walking to his penthouse Christmas Eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But on the Millionaire Bored we believe
Now we love our mystery Santa
He pulled the job off very well
He even planted a squashed hamster
Peeking out from under his lapel
His shirt was spray painted bright blue
There were some empty butt cream jars
And he was found all wrapped up in a
Flag with only seven rows of stars
Lloyd Braun got run over by a reindeer
Walking to his penthouse Christmas Eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But on the Millionaire Bored we believe
Now our pig was on the skewer
MAWGs everywhere could rejoice
But the new year was not happy
Cause Michael Davies made a stupid choice
There would be no Syndie phone game
And no FFQ's to attack
All I can say is that next Christmas
Mr. Davies better watch his back!

My faves right now...
Bette Midler - Cool Yule Album
Time Life - Peaceful Christmas
Spike Jones Christmas Album
Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
Boston Pops - Christmas Festival
Steve Lawrence & Edie Gorme - That Holiday Feeling (this is my favorite)
Their rendition of "Let it Snow" is the BEST!
Sarah Mc CLachlan - Wintersong
Pytor Illych Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker

The bare-bones, guitar version is the best, IMO.

I LOVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!
I LOVE Dominick the Donkey. So sue me.
I really liked the hippopotamus song when I first heard it last year - a couple of times. NOW, I hear it every three hours. Too much. The charm is gone.
If you know what's good for you, you will NEVER play Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney in my presence. Let's just leave it at that.
I was too busy at work today (imagine!
) to reply to this. So, when I had a minute here and there (waiting and waiting for people to give me changes on copy), I scribbled down a few songs.
If I were programming a Christmas station (and nobody asked me
), this is what I would start with (and preferred versions) ....
1- Sleigh Ride - But ONLY the Leroy Anderson arrangement (for the Boston Pops?), with the kind of Big Band swing at the end.
2- The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
3- Mary, Did You Know? - My favorite version is the multi-part harmony of the eight-graders of St. Malachy's Parish choir in North Philadelphia. But, since that's OUR parish, I am partial to them.
4 - O Holy Night - Mario Lanza or The Three Tenors
5 - I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day - Nat King Cole OR Sinatra
6 - Jingle Bells - Crosby/Andrews Sisters or Barry Manilow retro 1940s version
7 - Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - Springsteen or Crosby/Andrews Sisters/Manilow redux ONLY
8 - Mary's Boy Child - Harry Belefonte
9 - Gesu Bambino - Harry Simeone Corale
10 - Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano
11 - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - The Barenaked Ladies/ Sarah McLachlan version
12 - What Are You Doing New Year's Eve - The Orioles
13 - Adeste Fideles - Bing Crosby or Celine Dion
14 - Silent Night - Peggy Lee's version from Lady & the Tramp or the Vienna Boy Choir (in German)
15 - Silver Bells - Margaret Whiting
16 - Pretty Ribbons - Roy Orbison (nowadays, this makes me cry - I cannot explain why - so maybe I won't listen to it this year)
17 - The Christmas Medley - The Salsoul Orchestra
18 - The New Year's Medley - The Salsoul Orchestra
19 - Baby, Please Come Home - Darlene Love
20 - Baby, It's Cold Outside - Pearl Bailey
21 - Hark, the Herald Angels Sing - Ella Fitzgerald
22 - All I Want for Christmas - Mariah Carey? I don't know who sings the version I've been hearing but it's very fun and peppy.
23 - Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
24 - Dominick the Donkey - Lou Monte
25 - White Christmas - The Drifters
26 - Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt (accept NO substitutes)
27 - Count Your Blessings - Rosemary Clooney
28 - Mele Kalikemaki - Bette Midler
29 - The Elton John Christmas Song (whatever it's called)
30 - Good King Wenceslas - The Manhattan Transfer
31 - Any version of the old English carol about if you haven't got a ha'penny, then God bless you.
32 - All I Want for Christmas is You - I think it's Reba McEntire but I'm not sure
33 - A Christmas Auld Lang Syne - Bobby Darin
34 - Blue Christmas - Elvis
35 - Christmas in New Orleans - Louis Armstrong (and thank you, Fantine, for turning me on to this)
Sorry it's a long list (I didn't realize it when I started - HA!).
But, as I said, I really love Christmas music.
NOTE: The Mariah Carey (?) song and Reba McEntire (?) song are different songs. The Carey one is upbeat and peppy. The McEintre one's tune is very similar to parts of My Heart Belongs to Only You.
Just in case I get a radio programming job tonight.
