Hi!
I'm making a brief drive-by as I climb out of the intense darkness (as in little to no Internet time unless you are a badminton player or skating student) of the badminton season to say 'Hi' and ask if anyone is going to the World Figure Skating Championships this week in L.A.? I will be going to all the events beginning with the Wed. afternoon events and thought it might be fun to see if any BBs are also attending any or all events (or volunteering).
I can see a reply on this Bored until about 5:00 PDT today and MAYBE a quick glimpse first thing Wed. a.m. or a P.M. within those timeframes works. If anyone is going, wants to meet, and gets this after about 8:00 a.m. on Wed., I will be staying at the Hotel Figueroa right near the Staples Center. Since asking for "Winnamill" probably won't work, you can ask for Karen Christensen.
Hope to see some of you there!

I sent you a pm. I will be walking right by your hotel tomorrow on my way to trivia at about 5pm. But I notice that the skating schedule is quite busy. I will call and leave a message.

And we all would expect nothing less.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!
That'll be $10, please.

I got to see the Worlds twice in Ottawa in 1978 and 1984
1978 didn't really have any memorable names but 1984 had Scotty Hamilton win the mens over Brian Orser, Katarina Witt win the ladies, Canadians Underhill and Martini won the pairs and the fabulous Torvill and Dean in the Dance getting 6.0 across the board for artistic.
Watch them here

WOW!! Who knew there were so many skating fans here?
I went to the 1984 Worlds in Ottawa too! How fun! We couldn't get tickets to the Ice Dancing finals (Torvill & Dean were doing their Bolero) but someone told us to get tickets to the practice. They were $3 and the place was almost empty so we sat in the front row. Suddenly their music came on and they did their ENTIRE Bolero routine right in front of us! What a thrill!
Plus, there was a power outage at the rink that night so we didn't mind not having sat in the dark for a couple of hours.
I went to the 1987 Worlds in Cincinnati and it was a disaster, although immensely fun! I got a speeding ticket with my rental car (my car engine had to be cleaned after an oil change attendant the day before accidentally put SEVEN QUARTS of oil in my car and ruined some parts), my sister got the flu DURING the performance and had to be helped to the ladies room, we were staying at a bizarre bed and breakfast (they had 12 dogs) and I got the flu on the way home and we had to stop at EVERY rest stop between Ohio and home.
Ah, the days.
Still, I WANT TO GO TO VANCOUVER TO SEE THE OLYMPICS NEXT YEAR.

In the summer of 1998 we were up in NY and the Goodwill Games were in town, so I wanted to go see some figure skating. NO ONE was there so they dropped the ticket prices down to $5. It was men's and pairs that night and I saw some great skating, including Timothy Goebel hitting a quad back when quads were rare and he was the only American landing them.
The next day they advertised the $5 price and we went back to see the women, but the place sold out. Dang it.
When I'm a Lady Who Lunches I want to go to skating competitions and dog shows in the winter and baseball games in the summer.

In 1984 I was in line at the Civic Center Box Office the morning the tickets went on sale.
