A Jewish trivia quiz? What say?
1. Great. I don't know it. Don't think Lyle Alzedo was in the Olympics, & Sandy Koufax was a little old by that time. Is Mark Spitz Jewish?
2. Mezuzah
3. Seven days.
4. Sukkos. Sukkot in modern Hebrew, which is not the 20 words of religious Hebrew I know. The "Feast of Tabernacles". No, we don't eat the tabernacles. We eat in the tabernacles. I'd bet "souk" as in "market" in Arabic has the same route. So we could play soukos music in the tabernacles????
5. If not now, when? Am in the wrong game after all?
QOD: Reuben, Dan Naftali. I could go on. They're on the box of Hanukkah candles, sometimes.
Bonus: Mogen David (that's the company) 20/20.
I will stick to the 13 (or whatever) % myself.

1. Mark Spitz?
2. Not a clue.
3. A week, I think
4. I think this is the Feast of Booths or something like that.
5. Nope
QOD: Reuben, Levi and Judah
Bonus: You're probably going for Mogen David (Mad Dog 20/20), but isn't Manischewitz kosher too? Or maybe Manischewitz makes MD 20/20, I dunno....

There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Spoiler
1. What gold medal winning American athlete was removed from the Olympic Village and taken out of the country under heavy security after the terrorist attack on the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics?
Mark Spitz?
2. By the doorway of a Jewish home, you will usually find a small case that contains a piece of parchment on which the Shema has been written. What is this called?
Mezuzah? (sp?)
3. How long does the period of mourning known as shiva last?
10 days?
4. Chanukkah gets a lot of press because it's close to Christmas, but it's not a really important Jewish holiday like, say, Yom Kippur. One of my favourites is the festival that begins five days after Yom Kippur, when they build tents with corn husks on the lawn of the temple. What is this festival called?
Purim?
5. Provide the last line of Rabbi Hillel's famous three questions: If I am not for myself, who is for me? When I am for myself, what am I? (Hebrew translations always vary, but not that I've ever seen on the third question.)
??
QOD: The Twelve Tribes of Israel were descended from the sons of Jacob. Not counting the House of Joseph, name three (and only three) of the sons who make up the remaining 11 tribes.
Benjamin
Levi
Isechar
5 Point Bonus: Although I haven't done the necessary research for many years, I think that this may be the only kosher rotgut. Please give the full brand name or street name (either one, but it must be the full name either way) of this skid row wine made by a company whose name is derived from the Hebrew for a symbol of Judaism.

Yeah, yeah, the Jewish among us will have a bit of an advantage on this one. But don't worry, Christians, you'll get yours in a couple of weeks.

ANSWERS 12-04-07 QOD
Chappy Chanukkah ANSWERS
1. What gold medal winning American athlete was removed from the Olympic Village and taken out of the country under heavy security after the terrorist attack on the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics?
Mark Spitz
I was surprised how many people got this one.
2. By the doorway of a Jewish home, you will usually find a small case that contains a piece of parchment on which the Shema has been written. What is this called?
Mezzuzah
You learn something new every day. I just know the boxes as tefillin, never heard of phylacterie (but, yes, they are the head and arm boxes)
3. How long does the period of mourning known as shiva last?
Seven
Shiva is Hebrew for seven. You don't participate on Shabbat, but it still counts as one of the seven.
Sukkot
Some days you learn two things! All the Jews I know just call it Sukkot, I didn't know it was also known as the Feast of the Tabernacles.
5. Provide the last line of Rabbi Hillel's famous three questions: If I am not for myself, who is for me? When I am for myself, what am I? (Hebrew translations always vary, but not that I've ever seen on the third question.)
If not now, when? or And if not now, when?
If the three words not, now and when were in there, I counted it correct.
QOD: The Twelve Tribes of Israel were descended from the sons of Jacob. Not counting the House of Joseph, name three (and only three) of the sons who make up the remaining 11 tribes.
Asher, Benjamin, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, Zebulun
I was originally going to say besides House of Joseph AND Levi, since the Levites are kind of separate. I'm glad I didn't, since most people used Levi (not saying they wouldn't have known another one, just saying).
5 Point Bonus: Although I haven't done the necessary research for many years, I think that this may be the only kosher rotgut. Please give the full brand name or street name (either one, but it must be the full name either way) of this skid row wine made by a company whose name is derived from the Hebrew for a symbol of Judaism.[/quote]
The company is Mogen David, from Magen David (Shield of David). The name of the wine is MD 20/20, affectionately known as Mad Dog 20/20. You had to have MD or Mad Dog and 20/20 in there.

You got the 20/20 part, but the company is Mogen David, the wine is MD 20/20.Rexer25 wrote:Not that I should be a kvetcher or anything, but could you check my bonus answer again, please?
If it's any consolation, I kvelled all over the place when I saw that several people (yourself included) came up with the 20/20.
