Where did it come from and is it a nickname or a slam?

I would not want to start using it if it is a slam.

Sorta like Pea, I think -- I don't remember how we started using that, either. I'm sure not using it as a slam. It's just shorter -- less opportunity for the speling and tpying to kick in.

Esto is Estonian or, more accurately, Estonian-American. Years ago, on an old board, he turned me on to the delights of Estonian cowboy music, as I had doubted there was such a thing. Silly me.

It's a bit like that, although Estonia seems to have a mother lode of hard-ridin', gun-slingin', young tunesmiths who write original cowboy songs about the joys and sorrows of chasing steers on the range and getting drunk in Amarillo. If anything ever gets lost in historical or geographical accuracy, they make up for it with enthusiasm. It's all rather charming.

If it is being intended as a slam, it's not working. When I get together with friends, we have "Estos" and "Amis," among other nationalities/speaking languages.

I vaguely (thanks, mini) remember the Estonian cowboy music thing. That was definitely a one-shot e-mail/video being forwarded in our community, rather than the norm for (then) current Estonian music. I think kids there favor Heavy Metal and Goth-type stuff, for the most part.

From those early conversations with SC, I DO remember her saying she used to know a couple of professors in OK who were Estonian. I told her that could probably find someone within a few degrees of separation from me who knows them. My first call was to my B-i-L, who immediately remembered their names and areas of expertise. SC verified that it was, indeed, the couple she knew.

It's a small world. Hemingway once wrote “In every port in the world, at least two Estonians can be found.”

I had thought that maybe you did the est training and went nuts for it. The I decided that couldn't be true, as when I have mentioned it, you have not commented.
