The Margaritaville Cafe's and stores on the other hand have been around a good bit longer (Key West, the first one, opened back in the mid 80's) and are still run by his company to the best of my knowledge.

There's a Margaritaville right at the start of the cruise ship pier in Grand Turk (Turks & Caicos). I was told that the pier and the little shopping village at its start were all built by Carnival. Some tourists get off the cruise ship and spend all day at Margaritaville, ignoring whatever the island has to offer. I would guess the same applies to other cruise ship ports o'call. Then they get home with the impression that every Caribbean port is just like Florida.

It's also silly that Margaritaville and other places that build locations near cruise ports like Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies charge US tourist prices ($8-10 a drink and more than that for a sandwich) when you can get bigger portions and equal or better quality for far less money within a short walk or cab drive in most ports.

Although if you have been on the road for an extended period of time I can understand it a bit as sometimes it is nice to get a little slice of home before plunging forward again into "culture".

I once sought out a bar in Saigon run by an American ex-pat that had a cheeseburger/Buffett kind of theme midway through a four week tour of Japan and SE Asia just to get a nice juicy burger and hear a little English without an accent (or much of one anyway if you don't count the Brit/Aussie/Canadian ex-pats you tend to stumble across in places like that, a fascinating bit of culture in its own right I might add) before plunging back out in the mysterious world of steamed rice, veggies and spicy mystery meat found in the outer reaches of "Indochine".

They've been away from the "little slice of home" for a maximum of one week when they go there. And it's not a matter of taking your life into your hands as can happen in some places like Jamaica if you go wandering around looking for local "culture." It's a matter of people being too lazy either physically or mentally or too afraid to sample something different.

It's okay to not want to try something different. It doesn't mean there is something physically or mentally wrong with people. Some people just like what they like.

I've gone to GenCon for over 20 years straight - starting from its first year in Milwaukee to its move to Indy five years ago or so. I intend to go again this year.
