Karate Kid, Rocky, Queen Christina, Robin Hood, Gigi, American in Paris, Shane, Alice Adams.

I am thinking the actors play the title character. But that still gives us the kind of disjointedness that we were thinking of.

Which is why I don't think Warren Beatty works for BONNIE AND CLYDE (since we don't have Faye Dunaway). But Paul Newman works for "The Left-Handed Gun".

Peter Boyle was in a flick called "Joe" by John Avildsen. (FTR, I remembered the movie, but not the director, so I did look that part up).

Heston was in Wyler's Ben Hur.

Steiger was in Lumet's Pawnbroker.

Did Reiner direct The American President?

De Mille also directed the Jeffrey Hunter King of Kings remake I think.

I think B-3 is "The Nun's Story," since Fred Zinnemann would give us Vanessa Redgrave (Julia) and part of Spencer Tracy (The Old Man and the Sea, which he codirected with John Sturges).

And yes, Rob Reiner did "The American President".

Add

Norman Jewison - Steve McQueen ("The Cincinnati Kid" and "The Thomas Crown Affair") and Denzel Washington ("The Hurricane").

I think I figured out the Elizabeth/Judas one:

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY had Glenda Jackson ("Mary Queen of Scots") and Murray Head (who was the original Judas on the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar") vying for Peter Finch's affections.

That gives us John Schlesinger, Jon Voight (again, "Midnight Cowboy"), and Dustin Hoffman (again, "Marathon Man").

Well, DUH. "A Man For All Seasons" is what made me think of him in the first place! That said, though, Frank referenced that movie in his clue for Scofield, and he usually doesn't do that.

Edited to add: That "DUH!" was for ME, not you. I realized after posting that it could be read either way, and didn't want you to think I was being condescending!

Working backward and with a bit of cheating. Nicholas Ray directed the King of Kings remake with Jeffrey Hunter, Rebel without a Cause (Dean) and Johnny Guitar (Hayden). Checking Ray's filmography, this movie is Knock on Any Door, which was produced by Humphrey Bogart's production company.

I mean, not in that sense. I would add, though, that not every movie that there is one small refinement in the "title character" bit that may help eliminate some choices. Very small.

I can do a consolidation. I removed Omar Sharif (Funny Girl), James Dean (Giant), Miriam Hopkins (These Three), and Fredric March (Best Years of Our Lives), since those movie titles don't apply and those actors are used elsewhere. I put question marks on other movies that aren't exactly the character played by the actor. I put stars next to the actors' names that have been used at least once, except for the ones that have question marks by their movies.

This is going great! I do need to clarify something, because it will louse things up later and you probably won't be able to figure out based on the information you have.

I was only considering something a title role if the title consisted only of the character reference. (Dr. Strangelove is a partial exception, since the rest of it is an alternate title.) So The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Old Man and the Sea don't count. (In one case, you can keep the actor where he is, just change the movie for another previously mentioned by someone else.)

Also remove Twins, since Ahnold played only one of the title roles. (Same reasoning behind rejecting Bonnie and Clyde for Warren Beatty.)

And there's one typo: the Coen Brothers movie is The Man Who Wasn't There, not The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Garson was in Wyler's Mrs Miniver

Modine was Birdy. Perhaps Parker directed?

Arnie was in K Cop - Reitman directed?

Flynn is captain Blood then.

Dang, I thought of Birdy for Matthew Modine, but I didn't look hard enough to see that Alan Parker was on the list. When I was in college, they had an on-campus screening of Birdy before its release, with Alan Parker and Matthew Modine in attendance. Alan Parker gave a little speech and took questions afterward.

Thank you, plasticene, for the consolidation.

I was giving TLAF a computer lesson for a couple of hours before we left the shore, so I didn't have the access I thought I would.

Adding a couple....

I am betting that B-22. KAREL REISZ directed David Warner in Morgan and Vanessa Regrave in Isadora.

John Schlesinger's third is Tom Courtenay as Billy Liar.

Did Ivan Reitman direct Schwarzenegger in Junior?

Cecil B DeMille directed Claudette Colbert in Cleopatra and Fredric March in The Bucanneer.

The only title role I can think of Walter Huston is Dodsworth. I am guessing William Wyler? directed it.

Dietrich has me flummoxed because the only things I can think of -- Scarlet Empress, etc. -- were (IIRC) directed by VonSternberg.
