I Love My New Brother

#1 Post by Sisyphean Fan » Wed Mar 18, 2009 1:13 pm

So as not to have poor Sunny go through having two threads highjacked in as many days.....

My new thermal printer ROCKS! I actually squeaked when the first shipping label zipped out. I have no idea why I put off getting one for so long.

If you have stock in HP, sell! It's bound to take a dive now that I don't have to spend a small fortune on those stupid little HP21 ink cartridges.

It's okay Fanny, I'll let you hijack my thread anytime you want to!! :) Of course, I will try desperately to get it back, all the while, increasing my post count! But I will never be mad at you for hijacking.

Here is my stupidity - what is a thermal printer?

It's a printer that doesn't use ink, it uses heat to burn the impression. Sounds too good to be true, huh?

Here's the catch. You need special thermal paper. I still have an old TI thermal 10 key from the 70's, but I don't think they even sell the print rolls for it anymore.

I think most modern cash registers are thermal (I'm pretty sure Mecca's are that way because I've never had to wait for them to change the ribbon). The ones with the receipt tape that is kind of slick.

Voting machines use thermal printers too; if you ask for a printout, it looks just like a Mecca cash register tape.

Problem: Unless storage is very carefully temperature controlled to keep it cool, the print fades, often in a matter of months. So you can usually forget a recount after that. Hopefully none would be needed; I think it's just a matter of complying with federal storage requirements.

Is that similar to what our faxes used to be printed on...that shiny paper that would fade out after
a certain amount of time?

Those HP refills do break the bank when you need refills. Our office has 5 deskjet printers and it takes
a sizable amount of money to buy enough cartridges to keep the supply adequate.

Yeah, they used to be called thermofaxes.

Y'all are right about the HP refills -- my printer cost me $10 at a yard sale. The printer cartridge costs $28 at Mecca, $32 at Office Depot. Sigh.

It's the same concept but, while the paper isn't up to the plain paper faxes of today, it's progressed beyond that thin, slippery crap that used to curl up into little rolls.

Just like blood sugar testers. They give you the machine, but then the strips cost the earth (unless you're tight with Wilford Brimley).

You could change it to "I love my newly adopted sunflower"...I'll call back and I'll bring BB&B coupons. About 200 of them.

We've been through this before. Don't be a tease. Just admit that you blew your chance when you had it and, now that you found out we run Vh1 Reality Show Pools, you're scrambling madly to back track. Ha!

Besides, your puny pile of BB&B coupons cannot compare to the gloriousity of the BB&B Coupon Mountain currently residing in my garage.....

Chris Ford was the first player to make a 3 point shot in the NBA.

That doesn't qualify as a non sequitur. It logically follows a statement of conversation preceding it.

I'm not big on non-sequiturs. I like there to be at least some form of logical connection between corresponding statements, or else my head explodes....
