That's not the film I was thinking of either. I thought his war movie was bound to be the answer to the remaining question from list B, even though I couldn't confirm that it had a scene like the one you described. I won't say what movie I mean, just in case it turns out to be the right answer, but meant for a different actor.smilergrogan wrote:Oops. No, that's not the right movie. I didn't remember John Terry from that film. He must have looked a lot younger.plasticene wrote:That's not the film I was thinking of either. Blythe Danner was also in 1776, and Bob Balaban was also in Midnight Cowboy. I guess it doesn't matter which we use for them.NellyLunatic1980 wrote:A few more before I leave:

Re: New GroganGame: Films Not Starring Jerzy Trela
Here are some of our unmatched B movies. Any notion of whether these actors played parents on some of the series?
B9. The Running Man
Richard Dawson?
B11. Dangerous Liaisons
Mildren Natwick?
B14. Midnight Cowboy
Barnard Hughes? Brenda Vaccaro? John McGiver?
B19. For my money, one of the most memorable movie war scenes is the one in this film showing a young soldier weeping while firing and reloading his rifle
B20. Matewan
B21. Reservoir Dogs
Lawrence Tierney?
B24. Victor/Victoria
Lesley Anne Warren? John Rhys-Davies?
B25. Cape Fear
Polly Bergen? Jack Khruschen?
B41. Paper Moon
John Hillerman?
B43. Volunteers
B49. Alfie
(Since we know Smiler didn't put it here for Shelley Winters. Everybody else in the movie is British. Did Daphne have a mother on Frasier to go with her father?)

Re: New GroganGame: Films Not Starring Jerzy Trela
Well, you have to use all the movies in list B. I don't think I used any film in which the desired actor did not play one of the top six or seven roles in the film (usually judging by how they are listed on IMDB, although for some films I notice they are not listed in order of importance for some reason). I decided against using American Graffiti for Suzanne Somers, for example.franktangredi wrote:Blythe Danner was also in 1776, and Bob Balaban was also in Midnight Cowboy. Since we haven't used "Best in Show" yet, it's another possibility for Bob Balaban. Do we have another candidate from "2010'?

Re: New GroganGame: Films Not Starring Jerzy Trela
Okay, we seem to have exhausted what we know, so I cracked into IMDB.
On Desperate Housewives, Polly Bergen (B25. Cape Fear) played Felicity Huffman’s mother; Maria Conchita Alonso (B9. The Running Man) played Eva Longoria’s Mother; and Lesley Ann Warren (B24. Victor/Victoria) played Teri Hatcher’s mother.
Millicent Martin (B49. Alfie) played Daphne’s mother on Frasier.
George Plimpton (B43. Volunteers) played Carter’s father on E.R.
Kevin Tighe (B20. Matewan) and Swoosie Kurtz (B11. Dangerous Liaisons) played the parents of Terry O’Quinn on Lost.
We still haven’t matched the following:
B21. Reservoir Dogs
B41. Paper Moon
And we still haven’t identified this:
B19. For my money, one of the most memorable movie war scenes is the one in this film showing a young soldier weeping while firing and reloading his rifle

Ryan O'Neal (Paper Moon) played Whatever-his-name Scavo's father on Desperate Housewives.
If the unidentified movie could be "All Quiet on the Western Front," which I've never seen, but have read and could definitely see having a scene like the one described, the Lew Ayres might fit for the guest appearance he made on Mary Tyler Moore as Murray's father (who takes Mar on a date.)
Reservoir Dogs is a stumper to me. Steve Buscemi had kids on the show, but as far as I can tell, they haven't done much else in movies or TV.

Re: New GroganGame: Films Not Starring Jerzy Trela
You've managed to come up with two matches I didn't know about but which still work (three counting Shelley Winters). I didn't know about George Plimpton. Volunteers is there for another person, but the TV show for that match already has more than two parents so you don't need it to complete the puzzle. I didn't know about Lew Ayres either, and although All Quiet on the Western Front is not the right movie, he could still work using Johnny Belinda.
The last movie had big time stars, director and several Oscar nominations. Like I said, the reason the young soldier is crying is at the heart of the film.
It looks like you still need at least one parent for Seinfeld, Three's Company, and Malcolm in the Middle.

I found the actor who played Chrissy's father on Three's Company (Peter Mark Richman), but he doesn't seem to fit any of the movies.
And, interestingly, the actor who played Janet's father had a tiny role in Deliverance!

John Randolph of "Prizzi's Honor" played George Costanza's father before Jerry Stiller.
Barney Martin of "The Producers" played Jerry Seinfeld's father.
Robert Loggia of "Prizzi's Honor" played Lois' father and Cloris Leachman's husband on "Malcolm".

Re: New GroganGame: Films Not Starring Jerzy Trela
Here are the other matches I had in mind:
Mary McDonnell (Matewan) played Dr. Carter's mother on ER
Barnard Hughes (Midnight Cowboy) played Bob's father on The Bob Newhart Show
Rita Wilson (Volunteers) played Frasier and Niles' mother (in a flashback) on Frasier
Nancy Marchand (Naked Gun) played Frasier's mother on Cheers
Kathleen Turner (Prizzi's Honor) played Chandler's female impersonator father on Friends
Christopher Lloyd (Eight Men Out) played Hal's father on Malcolm in the Middle
All those character actors sure make for a lot of possibilities!
(Oh, and the one movie with special significance to the Tangredi should be obvious now.)
