“Movie Week” and “Wedding Week” in March on “Millionaire”

#1 Post by Millionaire Fan » Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:27 pm

Starting March 9th is the annual “Netflix Million Dollar Movie Week”. The experts from March 9th through March 11th will be Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz. Taking over for the final two days are Ted Sarandos (Chief Content Officer for Netflix) and Erin Ruane (VP Content Acquisition for Netflix). "Wedding Week will start on March 23rd. Trista and Ryan Sutter (from ABC’s The Bachelorette) will be experts for March 23rd through March 25th. The final two episodes of the week will see a former wedding week couple, Marla and Adam Bergh ($25,000 winners), helping the contestants in the hot seat.

Should I recognize these names? And are they going to both be experts at the same time or take turns?

Argh! First, we get a pair of "experts" whose only qualifications is being reality show cast members. Then come some former contestants, a group that usually are much better in the job, but the best they can line up for this version are $25,000 winners?

Ben Mankiewicz is one of the "Young Turks".

There weren't many of the wedding couples who were much better. These folks aren't last year's WE/WE/WE/WE pair, are they? They'd certainly be easiest for TPTB to book for this.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

No mention of that in the transcript.

Nope, not them. Chicago is definitely out of the WABC viewing area.

More important than Mankiewitz being a Young Turk is the fact that he and Lyons took over "At the Movies" from Ebert and Roeper, and Mankiewitz has been a "host" on Turner Classic Movies for several years (although I'd rather have Robert Osborn as my expert).

Also, Lyons is the son of long-time critic Jeffery Lyons, and Mankiewitz is the grandson of screenwriter Herman Mankiewitz (Citizen Kane, Pride of the Yankees), and grandnephew of legendary writer/producer/director Joseph L. Mankiewitz (All About Eve, A Letter to Three Wives, The Barefoot Contessa, Guys and Dolls).
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Thanks for that explanation, KT. They actually sound like reasonable experts for Movie Week!

Mankiewitz sure didn't sound like a Turkish name. :P

Agreed. If anyone, they should have gotten Lauren & Josh Fedeli, the couple that won $250,000 in Season 3.

As "takeovers" for Roeper & Ebert-sub, they were more like an offshoot of Entertainment Tonight than a movie-review program. The owners of the show had an agenda they were clearly hired to peddle, though. So I hope these characters actually know more about movies in general than they seemed to on the taken-over show; I turned it off about halfway into the 1st one. It was literally embarrassing to watch; you'd think they would be embarrassed, too.

They certainly do know stupid who's-going-out-with-whom trivia, but BAM movie week does usually go deeper than that, way deeper, after the 1st few Qs.

A recent LA Times article discusses how poorly-regarded Ben Lyons is within the film critic community.
