Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 3/5/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:33 am

Well, after two straight low scoring games in a row, maybe today will be more of a point bonanza, as there are lots of points to be had in this game. it is not only Theme Thursday, but it is a matching game as well! You will get the usual bonus points for indentifying the theme, but also will get bonus points if you can successfully match up the following 15 songs into 5 triplets based on the theme of today's puzzle.... which I promise you is not music heard on Mecca Radio. As usual, you are allowed to guess at the triplets even for those songs you can't get correct....

One other note just to be clear: the theme I am looking for in today's game relates to how the songs all match up into their triplets, and does not specifically refer to the individual songs themselves.... just in case anyone were to be confused on that point....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme, and 3 points for each correct triplet you match up....

1. Her life was like a desert flower burning in the sun.

2. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love

3. I´m a winner, I´m a sinner

Spoiler
Aha! My pathetic lyric recognition is not just limited to show tunes, after all. Other categories include more recent songs that had their lyrics rewritten for satirical purposes in Gridiron shows, such as

3. I´m a winner, I´m a sinner
Do you want my autograph
I´m a loser what a joker
I´m playing my jokes upon you
While there´s nothing better to do

which started life as "Breakfast in America" by SuperTramp;

songs that needed to be written --

5. My flag boy and your flag boy were
sit-tin' by the fire. - My flag boy told
Your flag boy: "I'm gon-na set your flag on fire."

The forthcoming "Arsonists work for the Department of Transportation," by Bic Lighter;

and songs I never liked because my mother played them on the car radio --

12. There will come a day
youth will pass away
then what will they say about me

"Just a Gigolo," by somebody even older than me.

There also must have been five or six songs for which I knew all the words in high school, but I don't think any of them have been incorporated into an LS game yet.

Theme? I dunno. I'm still confused by the clarification you included in case anybody thought the instructions were confusing.

Don't be shocked!
I can do a credible job with this!

1. Her life was like a desert flower burning in the sun.
Until I found the way to love, it's harder said than done

Okay, so not off to a good start. Familiar

2. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough

Call Me, Blondie

3. I´m a winner, I´m a sinner
Do you want my autograph
I´m a loser what a joker
I´m playing my jokes upon you
While there´s nothing better to do

Breakfast in America, Supertramp

4. Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

Top of the World, Carpenters (We sang this in high school chorus--want me to harmonize it for you? Thought not...)

5. My flag boy and your flag boy were
sit-tin' by the fire. - My flag boy told
Your flag boy: "I'm gon-na set your flag on fire."

Iko Iko, dunno who. This is the song that set me on track to the theme, as you can imagine...

6. Lay a whisper on my pillow
Leave the winter on the ground
I wake up lonely, is there a silence
In the bedroom and all around

Must Have Been Love, Roxette

7. Call me good
Call me bad
Call me anything you want to baby
But I know that you're sad
And I know I'll make you happy
With the one thing that you never had

Familiar

8. Like a country mornin', all snuggled in dew
Ah she's got a way to make a man feel shiny and new
And she sings in the evenin', oh familiar tunes
And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons

Very familiar

9. Maybe you want to end it, you've had your fill of my kind of fun
but you don't know how to tell me and you know that I'm not that dumb
I put 2 and 1 together and you know that's not an easy sum

OMG!! Smoking Gun, Robert Cray. I loved Strong Persuader....

10. Four young chiquitas in Omaha
Waitin' for the band to return from the show
A feelin' good, feelin' right and it's Saturday night
The hotel detective, he was outta sight

We're an American Band, Guess Who

11. Through the hourglass I saw you, in time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you, and turned to hear you say
If only for today I am unafraid

I didn't get this until the matchup: Take My Breath Away, Berlin

12. There will come a day
youth will pass away
then what will they say about me

Just A Gigolo, David Lee Roth

13. With everything that you do is wrong
And you feel like you can barely survive yeah
When those around you are crumbling downwards
Buried in the sunset alive

Nope

14. Go, shorty
It's your birthday
We gon' party like it's your birthday
We gon' sip Bacardi like it's your birthday
And you know we don't give a fuck
cause it's not your birthday!

In Da Club, 50 Cent

15. Don't you try and pretend
It's my beginning
We'll win in the end
I won't harm you
Or touch your defences
Vanity, insecurity

Don't You Forget About Me, Simple Minds

Theme?

The songs form a pair to give a two-word movie title, then add a song from the movie to complete the triplicate:

10-12-2 American Gigolo, Call Me

3-14-15 Breakfast Club, Don't You Forget About Me

4-9-11 Top Gun, Take My Breath Away

Have to WAG here:

1-8-6, Pretty Woman (girl-song type lyrics), Must Have Been Love

13-7-5, Rain Man (first song sounds depressing like rain), Iko Iko

Surprised? Impressed? :P Want some peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat?
Huh? What?

I'm going Esto on you! :P
I put 2 and 1 together and you know that's not an easy sum

This song was going through my head the whole time I was in the shower, and that line didn't make sense, because 2+1 is a pretty darned easy sum. But it's not an even sum. I still haven't fixed my computer so I can't do any Google research, but I bet that's the real word.

My copy of Strong Persuader was on a cassette tape in the 80's, so I wouldn't have it around and it wouldn't have had lyrics, most likely...

Like I said in my rules, I don't have time to dig through dozens of lyrics sites to verify the correctness of my lyrics. I only bust so much ass fo rmy LS peeps.... :P :P

And BTW, I did go through and correct two typos I noticed after I posted the game last night, so I more than did my job to cater to the spelling police anyway.....

I'll take a shot at Countries for a theme but either way I did infinitely better today than at Mecca.

Spoiler
1.) Let it Rain--Eric Clapton, 2.) Call Me--Blondie, 4.) Top Of The World--Karen Carpenter/The Carpenters, 5.) Iko Iko--?, 6.) It Must have Been Love--Roxette, 10.) We're An American Band--Grand Funk Railroad, 12.) Just a Gigilo--David lee Roth--I know he was not the original artist to do this song, but he's the only one whose name I know, 15.) Don't You Forget about Me--Simple Minds. Theme: At first, I thought it was Richard Gere, because out of the 8 songs I think I got right, I can link at least 4 to him. Then I realized that the theme you are looking for is probably movies. More specifically, a theme song to a movie, and another song or songs with the movie title in the title of the song. Groups: songs 2, 10 and 12--American Gigilo, songs 1, 5 and 8 (total guess)--Rain Man, the rest will be guesses, although I think the Breakfast Club may be in there somewhere. songs 3, 7 and 14, songs 4, 9 and 11, songs 6, 13 and 15.

1. Her life was like a desert flower burning in the sun.
Until I found the way to love, it's harder said than done
LET IT RAIN - ERIC CLAPTON

2. Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
CALL ME - BLONDIE

3. I´m a winner, I´m a sinner
Do you want my autograph
I´m a loser what a joker
I´m playing my jokes upon you
While there´s nothing better to do
BREAKFAST IN AMERICA - SUPERTRAMP. SUPERTRAMP WAS THE FIRST BAND I EVER SAW IN CONCERT. IT WAS 1982. THE FIXX OPENED. BRENDAN BYRNE ARENA, BACK WHEN THEY CALLED IT THAT. I THINK HE WASN'T GOVERNOR ANYMORE BY THEN. MY SECOND AND THIRD CONCERTS FOLLOWED CLOSELY. MEN AT WORK, WITH HAIRCUT 100 OPENING, AT RADIO CITY (THE CARGO TOUR). THEN THE CONCERT I'M MOST AND LEAST PROUD OF, THE WHO AT SHEA STADIUM WITH THE CLASH OPENING. ALL I KNEW ABOUT THE CLASH WAS ROCK THE CASBAH AND MY ATTENTION SPAN WAS SUCH THAT I DIDN'T REALLY APPRECIATE IT. MAN I WISH I COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND SEE THAT SHOW, KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW.

4. Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me
TOP OF THE WORLD - THE CARPENTERS

5. My flag boy and your flag boy were
sit-tin' by the fire. - My flag boy told
Your flag boy: "I'm gon-na set your flag on fire."
IKO IKO (OR AIKO AIKO) - THE BELLE STARS (THOUGH I'M MUCH MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE SONG FROM MY REGRETTABLE GRATEFUL DEAD DAYS)

6. Lay a whisper on my pillow
Leave the winter on the ground
I wake up lonely, is there a silence
In the bedroom and all around
MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE - ROXETTE

7. Call me good
Call me bad
Call me anything you want to baby
But I know that you're sad
And I know I'll make you happy
With the one thing that you never had
I'M YOUR MAN - GEORGE MICHAEL I HAVEN'T GOT THE THEME YET, BUT IF YOU JUST NEEDED THE SONG TITLE NOT THE ARTIST, I WOULD HAVE MUCH RATHER SEEN LEONARD COHEN'S VERSION HERE.

8. Like a country mornin', all snuggled in dew
Ah she's got a way to make a man feel shiny and new
And she sings in the evenin', oh familiar tunes
And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons
BASED ON THE MY LOGIC BELOW, I NOW BELIEVE THIS IS KENTUCKY WOMAN BY NEIL DIAMOND

9. Maybe you want to end it, you've had your fill of my kind of fun
but you don't know how to tell me and you know that I'm not that dumb
I put 2 and 1 together and you know that's not an easy sum
SMOKING GUN - ROBERT CRAY. ANOTHER LYRIC I'VE APPARENTLY ALWAYS MISHEARD. I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS AN EVEN SUM.

10. Four young chiquitas in Omaha
Waitin' for the band to return from the show
A feelin' good, feelin' right and it's Saturday night
The hotel detective, he was outta sight
WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND - GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. I LOVE OTHER POP-CULTURE REFERENCES TO THIS BAND. ON THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS' LIVE VERSION OF SHE'S ACTUAL SIZE FROM DIAL-A-SONG, THERE'S A DRUM SOLO NARRATED BY ONE OF THE JOHNS (I JUST DON'T KNOW WHICH IS WHICH) IN WHICH THE NARRATOR CALLS OUT THINGS AND THE DRUMMER PLAYS LIKE THEM - CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD, GENE KRUPA, STEVIE WONDER BEFORE 1980, STEVIE WONDER AFTER 1980, ANIMAL FROM THE MUPPET SHOW, AND "THAT ANGRY GUY FROM GRAND FUNK RAILROAD AS SEEN ON VH1'S BEHIND THE MUSIC". ALSO, THERE'S THE SIMPSONS REFERENCE TO "THE BONG-RATTLING BASS OF (PERSON WHOSE NAME I CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO REMEMBER)

NOT PROUD TO SAY THE FIRST VERSION OF THIS SONG I EVER HEARD WAS NOT GFR'S BUT WAS SOME UNFORTUNATE 80S COVER (I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AUTOGRAPH) ABOUT WHICH THE LESS SAID THE BETTER.

11. Through the hourglass I saw you, in time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you, and turned to hear you say
If only for today I am unafraid
TAKE MY BREATH AWAY - BERLIN. YET ANOTHER BAND OF WHOM I ONLY KNOW 2 OR 3 SONGS AND THE ONE I LIKE BEST (THE METRO IN THIS CASE) IS THE LEAST FAMOUS

12. There will come a day
youth will pass away
then what will they say about me
JUST A GIGOLO. THE VERSION I KNOW IS DAVID LEE ROTH. WHICH IS PAIRED WITH I AIN'T GOT NOBODY. AND IF CALIFORNIA GIRLS WASN'T THE VIDEO WITH THE LAXATIVE THING (AND I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THAT), THIS IS DEFINITELY THE ONE.

13. With everything that you do is wrong
And you feel like you can barely survive yeah
When those around you are crumbling downwards
Buried in the sunset alive
PRETTY VEGAS - INXS

14. Go, shorty
It's your birthday
We gon' party like it's your birthday
We gon' sip Bacardi like it's your birthday
And you know we don't give a fuck
cause it's not your birthday!
IN DA CLUB - FITTY CENT

15. Don't you try and pretend
It's my beginning
We'll win in the end
I won't harm you
Or touch your defences
Vanity, insecurity
DON'T YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME) - SIMPLE MINDS

Theme?
I THINK THESE ARE SONGS FROM MOVIES.
I'VE NEVER SEEN AMERICAN GIGOLO, BUT I THINK CALL ME WAS FROM THAT. SO YOU'VE GOT 10 (AMERICAN) AND 12 (GIGOLO) MATCHING WITH 2
RAIN MAN OPENS WITH IKO IKO. SO 1 (RAIN) + 7 (MAN) = 5
DON'T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME WAS IN THE BREAKFAST CLUB. 3 (BREAKFAST) + 14 (CLUB) = 15
THAT LEAVES WHAT?
4 - TOP OF THE WORLD
6 - MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE
8 - WHO THE HELL KNOWS
9 - SMOKING GUN
11 - TAKE MY BREATH AWAY
13 - PRETTY VEGAS

OH. OF COURSE. TAKE MY BREATH AWAY FROM TOP GUN SO 4 (TOP) + 9 (GUN) = 11
THAT LEAVES 6 + 8 + 13 MUST MATCH. WISH I KNEW WHAT 8 WAS.
WELL, LET'S SEE
PRETTY VEGAS I'M ALMOST 100% SURE WASN'T IN A MOVIE. SO THAT LEAVES MOVIES WITH PRETTY OR VEGAS IN THEIR NAMES
PRETTY WOMAN
VEGAS VACATION (NOPE, DEFINITELY NOT THAT LINDSAY BUCKINGHAM SONG. AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE CONFUSING)
LEAVING LAS VEGAS
PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW
THAT HORRIBLE MOVIE WITH DEMI MOORE AND JEREMY PIVEN. NO. VEGAS ISN'T IN THE TITLE OF THAT - IT'S SOMETHING LIKE VERY BAD THINGS

I STILL HAVE RICHARD GERE ON MY BRAIN. LET'S PRETEND THAT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE WAS IN PRETTY WOMAN. . SO WE'VE GOT THE PRETTY FROM 13, WHICH MEANS THE WORD WOMAN IS IN THE TITLE OF #8. DOES THAT HELP ME FIGURE IT OUT (PAUSE) WELL AT LEAST I'VE GOT A GUESS NOW.

Do you want my autograph
I´m a loser what a joker
I´m playing my jokes upon you
While there´s nothing better to do

Breakfast in America by Supertramp??

4. Somethin' in the wind has learned my name

5. My flag boy and your flag boy were
sit-tin' by the fire. - My flag boy told
Your flag boy: "I'm gon-na set your flag on fire."

6. Lay a whisper on my pillow
Leave the winter on the ground
I wake up lonely, is there a silence

Call me bad
Call me anything you want to baby
But I know that you're sad
And I know I'll make you happy
With the one thing that you never had

Spoiler

I Go I Go - I know they use the song in Rain Man. Is it Bananrama, maybe?

I´m playing my jokes upon you
While there´s nothing better to do

Breakfast in America - Supertramp

4. Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

Your flag boy: "I'm gon-na set your flag on fire."

In the bedroom and all around

8. Like a country mornin', all snuggled in dew

And she sings in the evenin', oh familiar tunes
And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons

Sweet City Woman - The Stampeders (Calgary's finest!)

9. Maybe you want to end it, you've had your fill of my kind of fun

I put 2 and 1 together and you know that's not an easy sum

Pretty Stupid at Math - Fanny and the 33 Arithmewhizzes

15. Don't you try and pretend
It's my beginning
We'll win in the end
I won't harm you
Or touch your defences
Vanity, insecurity

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

Theme?

A word from each song makes a two word movie title and a third song was prominent in the movie.

As with most people (I bet), knowing that you previously used Call Me so it had to be that exact song along with Gigolo gave it to me right away. Of course I still had to drag out the old notebook to try and piece together the ones I didn't know....

American Gigolo - Blondie = 10/12/3

Breakfast Club - Simple Minds 3/14/15

Top Gun - Berlin 4/13/11

Rain Man - Iko Iko 1/7/5 Not sure on this one, but the only other movie I can remember hearing Iko Iko was The Big Easy. Which is three words plus I'm fairly certain that you would have used an Easy song like the Eagles or Ringo Starr. Plus I bet you included this one for Mini.

Pretty Woman - Roxette 9/8/6

Since I was a bass player myself, I pretty much know the name of every rock bassist between the 70s to the mid 90s. But I know my GFR, anyway. Mark Farner (I had SUCH a case on him) and Don Brewer were the other two.
