I missed one, too. Can't remember which one, now.

Re: How well do you know dog breeds?
I guessed on two -- I'd never heard of a schipperke before, but that sure didn't look like any pomeranian or keeshond I'd ever seen.
As for the Norwegian elkhound, they talked about his big ears in the explanation about why I got it right, but they cropped them in the photo!
Still, it was a very fun little quiz -- a couple of them were adorable.
Anybody hear of a catahoula? My friends adopted a dog not knowing what she was, and it turned out great. She's wonderfully friendly and smart and looks just like this picture except she's quite thin, not stocky at all, and is all black and white. But the spots look just like hers.

catahoula: Re: How well do you know dog breeds?
I met one once. I said "what is that?".
"A Catahoula."
"A Cata-what-a?".

Sometimes they go by an even longer name: Louisiana catahoula leopard hound. They don't necessarily all look exactly alike, because they are not an AKC breed, so "breeding standards" are not imposed.SportsFan68 wrote:

A young 'un was in the pound the last time I was there. I was tempted, because they are very, very smart dogs, but I could tell this youngster was going to keep growing for a long, long time. I had vowed after Annie's traffic accident that I'd never again get a dog too big to carry. So, I came home with little puppy Lizbit instead, who has continued to grow for a long, long time. (Even so, she's still probably 30 pounds lighter today than the poundmate.)

I'll tell her tonight what her real name is. She'll love it, and she'll try to lick me to show her appreciation.silvercamaro wrote: . . .

Even though she's thin, she weighs about 70 pounds -- she's solid. Her greyhound mix sis looks bigger but weighs about 65. They're both faster than a speeding bullet.

Not to my knowledge. Although catahoulas are hunting dogs, the "leopard" part refers to their spots.MarleysGh0st wrote:Does Louisiana have a lot of leopards that need hunting?silvercamaro wrote:Sometimes they go by an even longer name: Louisiana catahoula leopard hound.

Schipperke is Flemish for "little captain" , quite the water dog apparently.SportsFan68 wrote:I guessed on two -- I'd never heard of a schipperke before, but that sure didn't look like any pomeranian or keeshond I'd ever seen.

I got is confused in my mind with the Keeshond, which is the national dog of The Netherlands. The Dutch Barge Dog.
