Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 3/2/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:05 am

We begin Week 9 of the '09 Winter LS with yet another selection from the December 2004 LS, and the first of three chances you'll have this year to play a classic style matching game! This was the last of four Match Game Mondays from that contest, and one which I like because it's not totally obvious even if you know all the songs, but at the same time, it's also not so obscure that nobody will be able to figure it out.....

The usual rules from Match Game Monday apply.... please match up each song into a pair based on some common underlying theme. You may guess at the matches even for songs you do not get correct....

Today's Retro Monday game was originally posted on Monday December 27, 2004....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for each correct match....

1. you've gotta lotta nerve to say you are my friend
when i was down you just stood there grinnin'
you've gotta lotta nerve to say you have a helping hand to lend
you just want to be on the side that's winnin'

2. It's a dirty story of a dirty man,
And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail.
It's a steady job

3. In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor.
Now we all did what we could do.
Now Watergate does not bother me.
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth.

4. I, I'm so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
'Cause you make me feel so brand new

5. Grey is my favourite color
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a grey guitar and play

6. Drums beatin' cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doin' all right
You should have heard him just around midnight

7. As pretty as you are
You know, you could've been a flower
If good looks can cause a minute
You know that you could be an hour

8. She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
She's never hard to please

9. A dreamer of pictures, I run in the night
You see us together, chasing the moonlight

10. We don't follow fashion
That would be a joke
You know we're going to set them set them
So everyone can take note take note

11. so I gave some to my dog, when he began to beg
and then he licked his bowl and he looked at me
and did the wild thing on my leg
he used to scratch and bite me
before he was much much meaner

12. Johnny made a record
Went straight up to number 1
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing his song

You bastidge!
Today's Retro Monday game was originally posted on Monday December 27, 2004....

Now I'm wondering if I played this or just saw the answer, because I know HOW to match but don't know the matches. If I played I had a 6-day-old baby, so I can imagine the Vagueness Level went past 11...

A Bob Dylan song, but I don't know the title

And his clinging wife doesn't understand.

Now we all did what we could do.
Now Watergate does not bother me.

I think it's called Shooting Star and I'd guess it's Bad Company. Vague-a-Rama!

I match #12 with #2 and #3 with #9 because the singer was referenced in the song. I can make some vague matches for your enjoyment, but I don't need the points THAT badly! :P

Holy Moly!!I can't believe it!! I think I actually know (even though I don't know the title of the Bob Dylan song, or who performed The Way You Do The Things You Do, and I may not have all the titles or artists exactly right) EVERY SINGLE SONG!!!!!! 1.) ?--Bob Dylan, 2.) Paperback Writer--Beatles, 3.) Sweet Home Alabama--Lynyrd Skynyrd, 4.) Let's Stay Together--Al Green, 5.) Mr. Jones--Counting Crows, 6.) Brown Sugar--Rolling Stones, 7.) The Way You Do The Things You Do--?, 8.) Super Freak--Rick James, 9.) Cinnamon Girl--Neil Young, 10.) Goody Two Shoes--Adam Ant, 11.) Funky Cold Medina--Tone Loc, 12.) Shooting Star--Bad Company. As for matching up the songs, that will be a total guess, although I'm thinking there could be a connection between cinnamon and brown sugar or even sweet--as in home Alabama. Ok--Songs 1 and 3, 2 and 8, 4 and 7, 5 and 11, 6 and 9,10 and 12.

12. Johnny made a record

Shooting Star - Bad Company

Theme:

A person mentioned in one song who is doing another one.

This was tough. Everybody remembers the Skynyrd/Young thing, but I was going Sweet/Sugar Beatles/Ants, etc. until I started in on the Funky Cold Medina. Then Shooting Star clinched it, but I wasn't sure if it was songs or people (since there are both in all of those) until Goody Two Shoes (my second fave Adam Ant song, yes he had more than one...ha!). The only lyrics I know of Mr. Jones are the ones you had in an earlier LS, but luckily I was down to two by that time.

Odd coincidence: In a Life on Mars episode a couple weeks ago, a guy quoted the Love Me Do line from Shooting Star.

Bob Dylan/Mr. Jones
Beatles/Shooting Star
Neil Young/Sweet Home Alabama
Al Green/Goody Two Shoes
Mick Jagger/Funky Cold Medina
Super Freak/Temptations (I couldn't remember at first who originally did that song)
Push it real good!

You bastidge! When I saw Neil Young/Lynyrd Skynyrd & The Beatles/The Stones, I was sure this was something about well-known feuds. Those were the only pairs I could come up with. I was about to give up on the theme (again) when I looked at the "take note take note" from "Goody Two Shoes." That reminded me of the "Al Green, Al Green" part, which, with "Neil Young" in "Sweet Home Alabama," put me on the right track. Good game, dude!
