Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 2/27/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 27, 2009 2:57 am

Today's Free For All Friday is all about my favorite music videos! That means if you like 80's music, you will probably like this game (Sorry Clem). My favorites aren't exactly the classics. No "Money For Nothing", "Take On Me", "Addicted To Love" or any of that ilk here. Most of these are videos that may have seemed run of the mill, cheesy, or just plain forgettable to a lot of people, but are videos I will always stop what I'm doing to watch whenever they come on VH1 Classic.....

This game will be open until Monday morning...

1 point for the title and 1 point for the artist....

1. Well they put me to work
In the school bookstore
Checkout counter and I got bored

2. Once I never could hope to win
You starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now

3. Well ev'ry Friday night there's a band that you gotta hear
Just a dollar to get in and twenty-five cents a beer
They play rock and roll music like it hasn't been rocked for years

4. You don't know what it's like to live on your own
You've always had me there beside you
You think it's easy finding someone out there
who's gonna care as much as I do

5. You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too

6. And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

7. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashion way

8. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race

9. Oh, I want her, shit, I got to have her,
the girl is alright, she's alright.
Note: Edited by me to correct lyric since about everyone so far has pointed it out

10. You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire

11. When your girl has left you out on the pavement
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means

12. I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me

13. You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill

14. There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio

15. And I like fast food
The burgers always taste the same
No snotty waiters,
Escargot or Beaujolais

16. If you believe in the power of magic,
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to believe in someone,
Just pretend it's me

17. When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see

18. At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk

19. I've had enough, I'm getting out
to the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
there's so much stuff I will own

20. You are gonna hear what you hear
Fear what you fear - don't say a word
Don't let it show
You will be what you will be
You will reap everything you sow

BONUS INSTRUMENTAL! And you thought only Fanny would include instrumentals in LS... Please give the artist and song described below...

21. This former member of Miles Davis' band later went on to a successful solo career, and in 1983 scored a popular hit with an instrumental classic whose video won the first ever MTV Video of the Year Award in 1984...

BONUS (2 points): Which of the videos above features a stuffed squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone?

Spoiler
1. Smokin' In The Boys Room - I doubt that Brownsville Station had a video, so I'll go with Motley Crue
2. I'm Still Standing - Elton John. I liked this video, too.
3. (She's) Sexy and 17 - Stray Cats. I just heard this on 80s on 8 yesterday.
4. Nope
5. Nope
6. Got My Mind Set You - George Harrison. There were two videos for this one, and I liked the first, less popular one, better. I seem to remember that it involved a music box and a couple of kids, but my memory may be way out of whack on this one.
7. When The Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going - Billy Ocean. I don't remember this video at all.
8. Pop Muzik - M. My favorite song of 1979. The video is pure kitsch and cracks me up.
9. Legs - ZZ Top. I always thought they said "shit" rather than "said"
10. Lovin' Every Minute Of It - Loverboy
11. The Look Of Love - ABC
12. The Edge of Heaven - Wham! Tracey hates that Wham is one of my favorite groups (and George Michael one of my favorite solo acts) of the 80s. I'm not really thrilled with it either.
13. Big Love - Fleetwood Mac. I like this video, too.
14. Nope
15. Nope
16. Don't Answer Me - Alan Parsons Project
17. True Faith - New Order
18. Nope
19. Big Time - Peter Gabriel
20. Nope
21. Sounds like Rocket by Herbie Hancock

Bonus - Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison.

Spoiler
1. Well they put me to work
In the school bookstore
Checkout counter and I got bored
SMOKIN' IN THE BOYS ROOM - I DON'T KNOW THE BROWNSVILLE STATION VERSION AND I DON'T KNOW IF THEY MADE A VIDEO. SO I'LL GO WITH MOTLEY CRUE
ALL I REMEMBER ABOUT THE VIDEO HERE IS THAT WEIRD-LOOKIN' BALD GUY

2. Once I never could hope to win
You starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now
I'M STILL STANDING - ELTON JOHN
MY DAD THOUGHT IT WAS SCANDALOUS IN THE VIDEO WHERE HE MAKES SUCH A BIG POINT OF PATTING A GIRL IN A BATHING SUIT ON THE BUTT.
MY MOM THOUGHT IT WAS HILARIOUS THAT ELTON JOHN WAS THE ONE DOING IT.

3. Well ev'ry Friday night there's a band that you gotta hear
Just a dollar to get in and twenty-five cents a beer
They play rock and roll music like it hasn't been rocked for years
SEXY AND SEVENTEEN - THE STRAY CATS. ANOTHER SONG THAT SCANDALIZED MY DAD. I DON'T REMEMBER THE VIDEO

4. You don't know what it's like to live on your own
You've always had me there beside you
You think it's easy finding someone out there
who's gonna care as much as I do

5. You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too
BREAKING THE LAW - JUDAS PRIEST
MY BROTHER WAS THE JUDAS PRIEST FAN. I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER THE VIDEO TO THIS SONG. I DEFINITELY DO REMEMBER WATCHING BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD MAKE FUN OF IT. I ALSO REMEMBER READING AN INTERVIEW WITH ROB HALFORD AFTER HE CAME OUT MENTIONING THAT ALBUMS LIKE "HELL BENT FOR LEATHER" AND "RAM IT DOWN" HAD A NEW MEANING NOW.

6. And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it
I GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU - GEORGE HARRISON
THIS SONG IS JUST SEVEN WORDS LONG OR WHATEVER. DON'T REMEMBER THE VIDEO FOR THIS ONE EITHER. MOSTLY I WATCHED A LOT OF VIDEOS IN HIGH SCHOOL, AND THIS SONG CAME OUT WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE. I LIVED IN A FRAT HOUSE FOR A COUPLE YEARS SO I REMEMBER SOME OF THE VIDEOS WITH T&A, BUT I DON'T FIGURE THIS WAS ONE OF THEM.

7. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashion way
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING - IS THIS BILLY OCEAN? DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN THE VIDEO. I BET IT'S GOT STALKER-LIKE BEHAVIOR IN IT, THOUGH.

YOU KNOW WHAT I WANT TO SEE SOMEDAY? I WANT TO SEE A MOVIE WHERE SOMEONE DECIDES THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE. AND HE GETS ALL OBSESSED WITH HER. AND HE DOES SOME OF THE THINGS THAT EVERYONE DOES IN ROMANTIC COMEDIES. AND THEN HE GETS HIS ASS KICKED. NOT BY HER SMUG, UNSYMPATHETIC, "HE'S JUST THERE BECAUSE HE'S A SNEERING PROP THAT NEEDS TO BE OVERCOME TO GET HER BACK" NEW BOYFRIEND, BUT BY SOMEONE WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT HER AND IS WORRIED THAT IF THE STALKING DOESN'T STOP IT'S GOING TO KEEP ESCALATING. (MAYBE A BUNCH OF HER GIRLFRIENDS GET TOGETHER AND STOMP HIM INTO THE DIRT?) AND THEN THE SOMEBODY REALIZES HE'S BEING A DOUCHEBAG AND LEARNS TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE AND FALLS FOR SOMEONE WHO, YOU KNOW, ACTUALLY LIKES HIM.

8. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race
POP MUZIK - M
DON'T KNOW IF I'VE SEEN THIS VIDEO EITHER - UNLESS IT'S THE ONE WITH JUST A PAIR OF LIPS

9. Oh, I want her, said, I got to have her,
the girl is alright, she's alright.
LEGS - ZZ TOP. FOR MY WHOLE LIFE UNTIL THIS VERY MOMENT I THOUGHT IT WAS "OH, I WANT HER, SHIT I GOT TO HAVE HER"
NO SENSE TALKING ABOUT THE VIDEO. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS ONE.

10. You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire

11. When your girl has left you out on the pavement
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means
THE LOOK OF LOVE - ABC

12. I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me

13. You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill
BIG LOVE - FLEETWOOD MAC. THE LESS SAID ABOUT THIS, THE BETTER.

14. There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio
THE BOY IN THE BUBBLE - PAUL SIMON. I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN THIS VIDEO EITHER

15. And I like fast food
The burgers always taste the same
No snotty waiters,
Escargot or Beaujolais
MUSIC TIME - STYX. I'VE SEEN THIS ONE BUT I CAN ONLY VAGUELY REMEMBER IT. WAS THERE A PART WHERE HE WAS IN A RESTAURANT? I REMEMBER THIS WAS THE BONUS TRACK ON THEIR LIVE "CAUGHT IN THE ACT" ALBUM. WAS THIS THE LAST REAL STYX SONG?

16. If you believe in the power of magic,
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to believe in someone,
Just pretend it's me
DON'T ANSWER ME - ALAN PARSONS PROJECT. THE COMIC BOOK VIDEO. THE VIDEO WAS GOOD. I ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU DON'T BELIEVE WAS A BETTER SONG.

17. When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
TRUE FAITH - NEW ORDER. AND, SEE, I ALWAYS THOUGHT THIS WAS A BETTER SONG THAN BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE

18. At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk

19. I've had enough, I'm getting out
to the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
there's so much stuff I will own

20. You are gonna hear what you hear
Fear what you fear - don't say a word
Don't let it show
You will be what you will be
You will reap everything you sow

BONUS INSTRUMENTAL! And you thought only Fanny would include instrumentals in LS... Please give the artist and song described below...

21. This former member of Miles Davis' band later went on to a successful solo career, and in 1983 scored a popular hit with an instrumental classic whose video won the first ever MTV Video of the Year Award in 1984...
THIS HAS GOT TO BE ROCKIT BY HERBIE HANCOCK, DOESN'T IT?

BONUS (2 points): Which of the videos above features a stuffed squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone?
THAT'S THE VIDEO FROM THAT GEORGE HARRISON SONG. I DO REMEMBER IT NOW!

I believe this is Herbie Hancock. I think the video is Rockit, although it could be Contact. I just don't remember.

BONUS (2 points): Which of the videos above features a stuffed squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone?

IIRC, the video for Got My Mind Set on You had animals heads on the walls in a den. So I am guessing that's it, although I don't recall a squirrel specifically. I do remember a parrot and a wild boar of some sorts.

Today's Free For All Friday is all about my favorite music videos! That means if you like 80's music, you will probably like this game (Sorry Clem). My favorites aren't exactly the classics. This game will be open until Monday morning...

Even with extra time I can't get a bunch...
1. Well they put me to work
In the school bookstore
Checkout counter and I got bored

Smokin' in the Boy's Room, I can't even remember the original let alone the hair-metal remake...

2. Once I never could hope to win
You starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now

I'm Still Standing, Elton John. I hear this in a Spanish accent. One of the exchange students liked this song.

3. Well ev'ry Friday night there's a band that you gotta hear
Just a dollar to get in and twenty-five cents a beer
They play rock and roll music like it hasn't been rocked for years

Rock This Town, Stray Cats

4. You don't know what it's like to live on your own
You've always had me there beside you
You think it's easy finding someone out there
who's gonna care as much as I do

Nope

5. You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too

Nope

6. And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

I've Got My Mind Set On You, ES to Sprots. Or George Harrison

7. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashion way

Nope

8. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race

Pop Music, some one-hit wonder

9. Oh, I want her, shit, I got to have her,
the girl is alright, she's alright.
Note: Edited by me to correct lyric since about everyone so far has pointed it out

Legs, ZZ Top

10. You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire

Nope. But familiar.

11. When your girl has left you out on the pavement
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means

The Look of Love, ABC. I find I like them more and more as time goes on.

12. I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me

Road trip! Edge of Heaven, Wham! This is on our playlist.

13. You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill

This is familiar. I think it's probably boring...

14. There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio

Boy in the Bubble? It's a song on Graceland, I think. Paul Simon

15. And I like fast food
The burgers always taste the same
No snotty waiters,
Escargot or Beaujolais

Semi-familiar and probably lame...

16. If you believe in the power of magic,
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to believe in someone,
Just pretend it's me

Nope

17. When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see

Nope

18. At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk

And nope. The Nope Trilogy.

19. I've had enough, I'm getting out
to the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
there's so much stuff I will own

Big Time, Peter Gabriel

20. You are gonna hear what you hear
Fear what you fear - don't say a word
Don't let it show
You will be what you will be
You will reap everything you sow

Familiarish.

The Instrumental question is herbie hancock and Rock-It. Except what it won was Best Concept Video. On CJAD trivia the question of "First best video MTV" has been bouncing around in the immediate response game Slingshot, with the hosts being kind enough to list Hancock,,Lauper, Cars and Thriller, with the caller contestants zero for four so far. (1 - Hancock, 1 - Lauper, 2 - Thriller).

Can I get bonus points without scoring any regular points? The jazz musician is Herbie Hancock, and the video is for Rockit.

BTW, I would like to enter my objection to the song with lyrics that include the alleged word "alright." "ALL RIGHT" is two words. I have always blamed Janet Jackson's song "Alright" as the reason that American youth cannot comprehend the correct way to write "all right." Any recent dictionary citation that finds alright acceptable as an alternate spelling is pandering to the ignorant or badly educated core of American society, of which there is no scarcity.

You've always had me there beside you
You think it's easy finding someone out there
who's gonna care as much as I do

Bye, Kato - The O.J.s

5. You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too

Star-Studded Party - The Bailedout Bankers

6. And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

Got My Mind Set on You - George Harrison (I really like this album. I suppose the Jeff Lynne influence didn't hurt)

7. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashion way

Glory Hole - Larry Craig

8. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race

Pop Muzik - M (Prolly wouldn't have recognized it without the second line)

9. Oh, I want her, shit, I got to have her,
the girl is alright, she's alright.
Note: Edited by me to correct lyric since about everyone so far has pointed it out

Legs - ZZ Top (Jenna Elfman told Letterman that she was formerly a dancer on tour with ZZ Top. It would have been about 10 years after this video. Too bad. Dave asked her for a little demonstration. She was good.)

10. You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire

I Love You, Iris - John Hinckley, Jr.

11. When your girl has left you out on the pavement
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means

Look of Love - ABC (Great song. Great vidoes. This was on one of the first CDs I ever bought)

12. I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me

Hello, Sailor! - George O'Dowd

13. You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill

Big Love - Fleetwood Mac

14. There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio

Boy in the Bubble? - I know it's Paul Simon (and I think it's from Graceland)

15. And I like fast food
The burgers always taste the same
No snotty waiters,
Escargot or Beaujolais

Music Time - Styx

16. If you believe in the power of magic,
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to believe in someone,
Just pretend it's me

Don't Answer Me - The Alan Parsons Project (Whose little-known first album,"Tales of Mystery and Imagination," was based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe and featured the instrumental talents, among many others, of Burleigh Drummond, David Pack, Christopher North and Joe Puerta, the 4 members of Ambrosia. Stuart Tosh (sometimes of lb's favorites 10cc) also played on the album.)

17. When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see

True Faith - New Order (If ever a set of lyrics were screaming out for a Michael Jackson reference, this is it!)

18. At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk

Hyperactive - Thomas Dolby

19. I've had enough, I'm getting out
to the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
there's so much stuff I will own

Big Time - Peter Gabriel (Who had a slew of great videos in the 80s)

20. You are gonna hear what you hear
Fear what you fear - don't say a word
Don't let it show
You will be what you will be
You will reap everything you sow

I Do' Wanna Know - REO Speedwagon

BONUS INSTRUMENTAL!

21. This former member of Miles Davis' band later went on to a successful solo career, and in 1983 scored a popular hit with an instrumental classic whose video won the first ever MTV Video of the Year Award in 1984...
You're probably thinking of Herbie Hancock and "RockIt," but I Might Think the Cars won that year, thanks to Paulina Porizkova!

BONUS (2 points): Which of the videos above features a stuffed squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone?
Pop Muzik?

I have always blamed Janet Jackson's song "Alright" as the reason that American youth cannot comprehend the correct way to write "all right." Any recent dictionary citation that finds alright acceptable as an alternate spelling is pandering to the ignorant or badly educated core of American society, of which there is no scarcity.
How about 1887?

From Merriam-Webster on-line:

alright
One entry found.

Main Entry: al·right
Pronunciation: \(ˌ)ȯl-ˈrīt, ˈȯl-ˌ\
Function: adverb or adjective
Date: 1887
: all right
usage The one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <the first two years of medical school were alright — Gertrude Stein>.

1. Well they put me to work
In the school bookstore
Checkout counter and I got bored
Smokin' In the Boys Room - Motley Crue or Brownsville Station (You still get credit even if you don't name the version I am looking for. Anyway, the dude who plays the principal in this video flat out kicks ass....)

2. Once I never could hope to win
You starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now
I'm Still Standing - Elton John (I may have been a pretty naive 8 year old when this video came out, but it still wasn't hard to tell that Elton was a little fruity....)

3. Well ev'ry Friday night there's a band that you gotta hear
Just a dollar to get in and twenty-five cents a beer
They play rock and roll music like it hasn't been rocked for years
Sexy & 17 - Stray Cats (Lots of guesses for Rock This Town! Two cool things about this video... the nerds in the class all snapping their fingers in unison just before the start of the second verse, and girls who didn't know when to stop putting on eye makeup. Gotta love the 80's!)

4. You don't know what it's like to live on your own
You've always had me there beside you
You think it's easy finding someone out there
who's gonna care as much as I do
Who Will You Run To - Heart (I think this might have been a shutout! This came off of their "Bad Animals" release, and cool graphics and artwork in this video have always pleased the ES in me....)

5. You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too
Breaking the Law - Judas Priest (The all time coolest synchronization of music video and song occurs in this video! Those familar with the song know that there are two drumbeats that come in between the bridge and the first singing of the chorus. Rob Halford's bad boys are just entering the bank to terrorize the customers as it gets to this part, and they flash to some old, snooty British banker.... and in absolute PERFECT timing, he flinches [drumbeat #1] and then drops the paper he's holding in his hand [drumbeat #2], and it absolutely cracks me up everytime I see it.....)

6. And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it
Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison (I actually like the video for "When We Was Fab" better, but had to include this one to set up my bonus question....)

7. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river
That's the price I'm willing to pay
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashion way
When the Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going - Billy Ocean (Melly pretty much summed up what I love about this video. Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito in white penguin suits as back-up singers. So cheesy, it's hilarious!)

8. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race
Pop Muzik - M (This video contains the most exciting person to ever appear in a video in MTV history. Check out the backup singer doing the "Pop, Pop, Pop Muzik!" lines when they show her in this video. Damn, is she excited to be there or what!?!? Maybe she didn't have her morning coffee or something. I'll bet Second Chance was available....)

9. Oh, I want her, shit, I got to have her,
the girl is alright, she's alright.
Legs - ZZ Top (Classic yes, but the cool thing about this video is that it has such a deep story, to this day I still notice something about the story being told in this video that I hadn't paid attention to before....)

10. You want me to come alive
Just flick the switch into overdrive
You and me can let it be
Ready-Aim-Fire
Lovin' Every Minute of It - Loverboy (The band Loverboy kicks off stage in this video is a friggin' riot! Their "awful" cover of Working For the Weekend is so corny that it's great! And their dissing of the real Loverboy at the end of the video is another plus...)

11. When your girl has left you out on the pavement
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means
The Look of Love - ABC (Poison Arrow also deserves mention, but this is far and away their best video. And Martin's Fry's horribly mismatched wardrobe just makes it funnier....)

12. I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me
Edge of Heaven - Wham! (I think about every Wham video was just them playing in concert on stage, so not much exciting about that, right? Well, I believe this was their final ht as a group, and the video was certainly shot as a goodbye to their fans. Maybe the fact that I absolutely love this song just elevates the video for this one into the elite class in my book....)

13. You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill
Big Love - Fleetwood Mac (Great concept in this one. Constant moving camera shot, have the band pop up in certain places throughout the video, then rewind the whole damn thing at the end....)

14. There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio
Boy in the Bubble - Paul Simon (I love "collage" videos, and what's funnier than an electrified cat jumping down from a chair and walking across the floor.... not once, but TWICE!)

15. And I like fast food
The burgers always taste the same
No snotty waiters,
Escargot or Beaujolais
Music Time - Styx (I believe this video epitomizes the reason the guys kicked Dennis DeYoung out of the band... but thank God they did do this one first, because it is hilarious, and is easily my second favorite music video of all time....)

16. If you believe in the power of magic,
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to believe in someone,
Just pretend it's me
Don't Answer Me - Alan Parsons Project (How many people my age would know anything about APP if they hadn't done this video? Neat comic book concept backed by a great song...)

17. When I was a very small boy,
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
True Faith - New Order (This video is pretty well undescribable. You have to see it to believe it...)

18. At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk
Hyperactive - Thomas Dolby (One of the many songs with a memorable video despite never hitting it big on the radio. In certain parts of this video, Dolby looks like a dead ringer for a young Joe Buck...)

19. I've had enough, I'm getting out
to the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
there's so much stuff I will own
Big Time - Peter Gabriel (Yes, Sledgehammer was the innovator, but Big Time is better IMHO... and I loved Gabriel's videos from the So album...)

20. You are gonna hear what you hear
Fear what you fear - don't say a word
Don't let it show
You will be what you will be
You will reap everything you sow
I Do' Wanna Know - REO Speedwagon (The hands down, uncontested, no doubt about it greatest video of all time in my book. Kinda weird that my 2 favorite videos come from bands that were better knows for rocking out the pre-MTV 70's, but whoever came up with the idea and gags for this video is a damn genius! Unfortunately, I haven't seen this video in several years now, and VH1 Classic, in it's infinite wisdom, chose to skip right over it during their A-Z special New Years week. I am still pissed at them for that... )

- Rockit - Herbie Hancock (Yes, I goofed when I stated that it won Video of the Year. It was nominated, but lost out to the Cars "You Might Think". Hancock did win 5 other VMA's that night, and since it was still obvious what I was looking for here, the question stands...)

BONUS (2 points): Which of the videos above features a stuffed squirrel playing a pipe like a saxophone? - Got My Mind Set On You (It's towards the end of the video when the sax is wailing. Whatever happened to saxophones in pop music anyway? Songs that incorporate the sax are almost always cooler than songs that don't....)

JJC Points:

Fanny gets 3 JJC points for that interesting factoid about Herbie Handjob's mannequins...

Melo gets 2 JJC points for coming up with the correct VotY winner..

melly gets 2 JJC points for describing why I like the Billy Ocean video...

Saucy gets 2 JJc points for mocking my love of fast food....

ghost may not be one of my special buds, but I am fair-minded enough to reward those who make me laugh, so ghost gets a 5 point supermax....

etaoin also noted the correct VotY winner and gets 2 JJC points...

No HSoB, noting that songs 5 and 6 begin with the same 6 words does NOT get you a point..... it gets you 3 JJC points instead!

SC gets 2 JJC points for her linhuistic rant on alright/all right....

TBone, always willing to go the extra mile, gets 3 JJC points for being funny...

Clem gets a JJC point for his inconvenience...

Estonut gets 2 JJC points for also noting the correct VotY winner....

Pea gets 3 JJC points for not just sitting in the corner and looking cute.....

You forgot to give me my Supermax points for being the only person (including you!) to correctly use the + rather than an ampersand or the word and. If you don't have any extra, you can appropriate them from estonut's total, I'm sure the nitpicker in him would approve.....ha!

Btw, Brian Setzer is 50 this year. I saw him on tv a month or so ago and was putting him about 60. I'd forgotten just how young the Stray Cats were when they came out (what with all that Slim Jim Phantom/Britt Eckland Mrs. Robinson stuff).

Hey, the Speedwagon are funny guys! You will be too young to remember this, but the first REO Speedwagon album I ever got was called "You Can Tune a Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish".

That's the most ridiculous title I ever heard.....
Spoiler
Yes, their inspiration was Groucho Marx

See what interesting things you'd learn if you turned it over to the Greatest shows on Vh1 every once in a while?
Push it real good!
