I just did something both wonderful and stoopid

#1 Post by KillerTomato » Sat Feb 28, 2009 5:39 pm

Wonderful, cuz it's gonna be fantastic, I just know it.

Stoopid, cuz, given the state of the economy, it's just stoopid to lay out this kind of money just for a vacation, but....

I just booked my birthday-vacation. 3 nights in Lahaina, Maui and 3 nights on Waikiki beach. Yes, I loved my trip there last year so much, I'm going back, and this time I'll hopefully get a chance to do some of the things I didn't have the chance to do last time, since I was on a cruise. I'm finally going to see Hana, instead of having to stop halfway there because I had to be back on the ship, for instance. I'm going to snorkel Monokini atoll. I'm going to climb Diamond Head. And I'm going to lie on the beach and soak up the sun.

I guess this is my contribution to the economic stimulus. I'm getting a nice check back from my taxes in a few weeks, and considering my alternatives to going back to Hawaii were a week in Vegas and a cruise of the Virgin Islands, both of which, surprisingly, would have ended up costing me MORE than this trip (not the least reason being that both would involve casino gambling, and I'd take more cash to lose at the tables than this trip will cost me in airfare and hotels), I'm actually being fiscally responsible. Yeah, that's the ticket.

So if anyone's planning on being on Maui from May 9-12 or in Honolulu from May 12-15, I'll buy you a drink.

Congratulations!

You will have the memories for much longer than you would have the money.

I know this is going to be great for you.

Sounds like a plan to me! Have fun!!!

I'll be doing my part in stimulating the economy by sponsoring a group of
students from Auburn on a trip to Napa that very same week. I'll be thinking of you. We start our
week in Carmel and mosey on to Napa from there. Maybe we'll survive. Once those mean tax people
take away our charitable contributions, these type trips may be few and far between. It's too bad, because the
students get first class treatment on these outings, including a dinner at The French Laundry.

Most of these kids that go on the trip have never been out of the state of Alabama, so it's
really an opportunity of a lifetime for them. The restaurants that participate treat them so well
and teach them so much, it's a pleasure to see how much these kids gain from a trip like this.

It's a good idea to leave Las Vegas with more money than you brought! I hope to get there on this trip.

If you can get there by Monday, you can hook up with my husband and son! They're flying in to Honolulu from SF and heading to the Big Island to see if they can catch some of the lava flow. Well, I mean watch. I hope. Stephen's adventurous ways had me wondering if I was going to have to call a helicopter to get him down from the promontory where he was stranded last summer, but he somehow got down.

Steve won't agree to Maui because he says it's where all the Beautiful People go, so I've only been to Oahu and Kauai, and both on the same trip. Steve caught the Hawaii Bug, big time, and has signed up for any conference he can find there. He was there a month ago!

The word "Monokini" had my eyes popping for a second....

Edited for TMITSSS's sensitive eyes. In my defense, it never occurred to me that anyone would find that objectionable. In bad taste, yes, but not necessarily objectionable.

Congrats. There's some great vacation deals out there as the travel industry is hurting big time.

Any chance you'll invite your charming dinner companion from last year's cruise with you??

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Luckily, she's addicted to cruises, not land tours. But with my luck....

My son did a report on Helen Keller, and his teacher told the class Helen Keller jokes. The teacher.

So his favorite was: How did Helen Keller burn her cheek?

She tried to answer her iron.

How did Helen Keller burn her other cheek?

They called back.

Side note: this guy also taught Plaxico Burress in high school, so....
