Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Thanks again to John Corbett for providing more contestant answers.
#79 must be Bob Barker, who won a MTV Movie award for his golf course fight with Adam Sandler. That takes care of the last wrong answer.
Nelly said that only one answer with a question mark was right on the last consolidation. That means if Head of the Class is right (it seems like it must be), then Howard Cosell is wrong for #109.
If Cosell is wrong then we need the following five names to complete matches: Stephanie, Peter, Smith, Burke, and Howard. Those names have to be provided by the following four unanswered questions:
77. All three of his sons played college basketball. He was the coach for both his eldest and middle son, each at a different university. His middle son is now his assistant coach at his current coaching job, at yet another different university.
98. “That’s a lovely name--‘Angel’. But then, Satan was an angel.”
107. Her grandmother’s recording of a folk song written in 1878 was the first celebrity recording by a classical musician to sell one million copies.
109. He was the co-commentator of the boxing match that inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the screenplay for a little film called “Rocky”.
HOWARD COSELL?
I tried Wikipeding various combinations of the five names but didn't find anybody who seemed to fit the clues.
Nelly also says we need to use a nickname for one of the already answered people, so that could possibly provide one of the five names (but seems unlikely)
63. MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE must be the answer for the one contestant still missing.
We are supposed to make one quartet. I thought that was going to be the couples week winners (McNally) but their answer doesn't seem to be here. Maybe it is a second answer for someone who appeared twice on the show? The second answer would most likely have to be something used twice, unless it is the nickname.
Identify the 109 people, places, things, titles, and fictional characters below.
Arrange them into 47 trios and 1 quartet based on a Tangredi, or hidden principle, that you must discover for yourself. 21 answers will be used twice, 6 answers will be used three times, and 1 answer will be used four times.
Whenever you come across a quotation, bear in mind that I may be looking for a real person, a fictional character, or a title. It's up to you to work your way through the puzzle in order to determine what answers will allow everything to work out.

109 is either Redd Foxx or James Brown. The fight was Chuck Wepner vs. Muhammad Ali.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Finally found the last quote by Googling it plus needed names: Gene Barry as Amos Burke in "Burke's Law".
Seem to be stuck at this point. #109 has to be a PETER, unless the nickname we need is PETER. Tubby Smith's real name is Orlando, so no help there.
The name of the last contestant yet to be identified probably has to be a combination of two answers already used once. I don't see anybody that works on the lists of $250K and greater winners.
We have used 18 answers twice, and the allotted 6 used three times and 1 four times. The count seems to be correct, since we have used a total of 140 and need 145. One more to complete one match plus a quartet (or trio plus making a quartet out of an existing trio).
Unused/unanswered:
63. MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE must be the answer for the one contestant still missing.
109. He was the co-commentator of the boxing match that inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the screenplay for a little film called “Rocky”.
HOWARD COSELL? JAMES BROWN? REDD FOXX?
Partial Matches:
??. PETER ? + 37. Toni BRAXTON = PETER BRAXTON (25. CANADA)

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
only video of the fight that I could find had a Brit doing commentary. It was not broadcast live, only on closed circuit.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Found NANCY REDD, $250K winner from college millionaire, on Nelly's site. I can't find her transcript but will assume her answer was MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE.
On Nelly's site, Justin Castillo is listed as JUSTIN RAY CASTILLO, so I am making him the quartet, using Ray Combs a second time.
And it's the weirdest thing, but all of a sudden I have a vivid memory of Peter Braxton's appearance, and I clearly recall that he kept insisting Regis address him by his nickname, JERZY.
Nice game, Nelly - I enjoyed it!

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Peter "Jerzy" Braxton was not my intended matchup, but it's totally legitimate and it still fits the parameters that I had set. Nice find on that one, Smiler! (For the record, I was actually looking for Carl "Peter" Hempel.)
Nancy Redd did indeed win $250K by correctly answering that a lyric from "My Country Tis of Thee" was repeated during Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.
Congratulations to everybody who successfully worked together on my very first Tangredi puzzle. I may put together another Tangredi puzzle in the future... but not any time soon. This is hard work. I must say that I now have even more respect for The Great Tangredi and all of the work that he has done in putting together all of his puzzles over the years.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
The toughest puzzles are those in which you try to adapt the puzzle to a very specialized answer as here. The toughest thing in coming up with the questions is to gauge the proper degree of difficulty. Make it too easy and this bunch will have them all solved in one morning. These questions were tough but once the Tangredi was figured out, it allowed people to work backwards. Again, great job Nelly.NellyLunatic1980 wrote: Congratulations to everybody who successfully worked together on my very first Tangredi puzzle. I'm working on another one, but with my work schedule picking up, it may be a while before I finish it. I gather a couple of other people have some ready to post.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Damn! I knew that sounded familiar! In fact, I watched it only a few months ago -- I have DVDs of the first 16 episodes of Burke's Law. I know Gene Barry said it to Janice Rule in an episode entitled Who Killed Snookie Martinelli? So why the hell couldn't I recognize it here?smilergrogan wrote:Finally found the last quote by Googling it plus needed names: Gene Barry as Amos Burke in "Burke's Law".
I'm getting old.
Did I mention my feelings about Norman Mailer?

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Thanks! Sorry I couldn't contribute more to this one, but I just don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of the show that many other people here do.NellyLunatic1980 wrote:Peter "Jerzy" Braxton was not my intended matchup, but it's totally legitimate and it still fits the parameters that I had set. You did a very nice job here. Yes, it is time consuming -- especially the clue writing. But it's so much fun watching people putting it together, isn't it?
My aim is to have a new movie game ready to go after this week.

I have a movie game that I will post tomorrow morning. I predict it will be solved pretty quickly.

Is that "pretty quickly" in comparison to your last game?
